Standing in a brown Nehru collared suit before a light blue backdrop emblazoned with “National Conservatism,” the Indian politician Ram Madhav delivered a 20-minute address at the July 2024 National Conservatism Conference in Washington, D.C. Madhav denounced the ills of global “left-liberal ideology” and pledged the fealty of the Indian right to the global national conservative movement. Among his targets was “unbridled illegal immigration in the name of ‘multiculturalism’”—a curious emphasis, given that Indian nationals constitute one of the fastest-growing unauthorized immigrant populations in the United States. Madhav appeared to be reaching for common ground with his right-wing hosts. Striking…
For months, the government in Baghdad has sought to curb the Iran-backed militias that have long operated in Iraqi territory, struggling to meet the Trump administration’s demands that it bring them under state control, disarm them and cut off their funding.A wave of U.S.-Saudi airstrikes that targeted the militias early Wednesday now risks upending those efforts. The attacks, which killed at least 20 people, have provided a new justification for Iran’s allies in Iraq to hold on to their arms and claim that they are the forces best positioned to protect the country’s sovereignty. And for Iran, the violence presents…

Kerry Wan/ZDNETFollow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. My monthly streaming bill is relatively low, totaling $41/month for Apple Music, YouTube Premium Lite, Netflix with ads, and Peacock with ads. I don’t mind the occasional ad on my video streaming services, so I subscribe to ad-supported tiers to save a few bucks. You might expect free services to have limited usability, outdated titles, and incessant ads — and that assumption is not totally wrong. Yet, many free services have old favorites, local channels, and plenty of “Family Feud” episodes. If your paid, on-demand services are causing decision fatigue, it might be…
Amazon has tied the September 2025 hijack of the npm packages debug and chalk to North Korea. For ten months, the incident sat in the public record as crypto theft: a maintainer phished through a lookalike npm domain and a wallet-draining script pushed into at least 18 packages carrying more than 2 billion weekly downloads between them. The original Aikido and Wiz reports did not attribute the incident to North Korea. In research published July 29, Amazon Threat Intelligence assesses with medium confidence that the group behind the March 2026 axios compromise was behind it. The same group planted a…

NEW YORK (AP) — A first-of-its-kind U.S. study suggests invasive mold infections may be an underappreciated — and potentially deadly — threat. The researchers detected about 450 cases in Atlanta-area hospitals over five years. About a third of the patients died in the hospital. The findings, published this week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, come from an attempt to better gauge how common these kinds of illnesses are. The government does not require doctors to report the illnesses. “It’s kind of the first time we’ve had an estimate like this,” said the CDC’s Dr. Jeremy Gold,…
It’s been an unusual year for middle powers. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s powerful Davos speech, in which he called on middle powers to band together, brought them to the forefront of the global policy debate. Now, the Iran war has served as a reality check. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby’s recent social media posts dismissed the very idea of a “‘middle powers’ strategy” as a costly distraction. Yet beyond binary, simplistic success-or-failure narratives, the war has shed light on both the limitations of middle powers and the crucial roles they play in the global order. Middle powers may have…
