    Editorial Independence

    Our Commitment

NCIJ Network is committed to maintaining complete editorial independence in all aspects of its journalism.

Our credibility depends on our ability to investigate powerful institutions, corporations, governments, criminal networks, and individuals without influence, interference, or pressure from external actors.

Editorial independence is fundamental to our mission and is protected through clear policies and organizational safeguards.

    Editorial Authority

All editorial decisions are made solely by NCIJ’s editorial leadership.

    These decisions include:

    • Selection of investigation topics
    • Reporting priorities
    • Editorial strategy
    • Publication timing
    • Story framing
    • Findings and conclusions
    • Corrections and updates

No external organization or individual has authority over editorial decisions.

    Independence from Funders

NCIJ may receive financial support from foundations, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, individual donors, and journalism-support programs.

    However:

    • Funders do not select investigations.
    • Funders do not approve stories.
    • Funders do not review investigations before publication.
    • Funders do not influence editorial decisions.
    • Funders do not determine reporting priorities.

Financial support never guarantees editorial influence.

Independence from Governments and Political Actors

NCIJ is independent of governments, political parties, political movements, and public institutions.

We do not endorse political candidates or parties.

Our reporting may examine the actions of governments and political actors, but our editorial decisions are not influenced by political considerations.

    Independence from Commercial Interests

Advertising, sponsorships, partnerships, and commercial relationships do not influence NCIJ’s editorial work.

Editorial decisions are made separately from fundraising, sponsorship, and business activities.

A clear separation exists between editorial operations and financial operations.

    Editorial Firewalls

To protect editorial integrity, NCIJ maintains internal safeguards that separate:

    • Editorial operations
    • Fundraising activities
    • Business partnerships
    • Donor relations
    • Sponsorship arrangements

Editorial staff are not required to consider donor interests when conducting investigations.

    Conflict of Interest

All editorial staff, contributors, researchers, and collaborators are required to disclose actual or potential conflicts of interest.

    Examples include:

    • Financial interests
    • Business relationships
    • Family connections
    • Political affiliations
    • Personal involvement in a story

When conflicts arise, appropriate measures are taken to protect editorial integrity.

    Transparency

NCIJ believes transparency strengthens public trust.

    We strive to disclose:

    • Major funding sources
    • Relevant partnerships
    • Potential conflicts of interest
    • Significant corrections
    • Methodologies used in investigations

Transparency helps readers evaluate our work and strengthens accountability.

    Accountability to the Public

NCIJ is accountable to the public interest.

We serve readers, communities, and the broader public—not political, financial, or institutional interests.

Our mission is to produce independent journalism that contributes to transparency, accountability, and informed public debate.
