Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions are made independently and free from political, commercial, ideological, or personal influence.
No donor, sponsor, advertiser, government, political actor, or partner organization may influence reporting, editorial priorities, findings, or publication decisions.
Accuracy and Truthfulness
We are committed to pursuing truth through rigorous verification and evidence-based reporting.
Journalists must:
- Verify information before publication.
- Seek corroboration whenever possible.
- Distinguish clearly between fact, analysis, and opinion.
- Correct errors promptly and transparently.
Fabrication, plagiarism, manipulation of evidence, or deliberate misinformation are strictly prohibited.
Fairness and Respect
NCIJ strives to treat all individuals and organizations fairly.
We seek comment from subjects of serious allegations whenever possible and provide reasonable opportunities to respond.
We avoid unnecessary harm while recognizing the public interest in exposing wrongdoing and holding power accountable.
Conflicts of Interest
Staff members must avoid conflicts of interest that may compromise—or appear to compromise—their professional judgment.
Journalists should disclose:
- Financial interests
- Family relationships
- Business relationships
- Political affiliations that could affect reporting
Individuals with significant conflicts may be removed from related reporting or editorial decisions.
Gifts, Favors, and Payments
NCIJ staff may not accept gifts, favors, payments, or benefits that could influence—or appear to influence—their work.
Any unavoidable gifts of nominal value must be disclosed according to internal procedures.
Journalists must never pay sources for information except under exceptional circumstances approved by editorial leadership.
Source Relationships
Sources should never receive promises that cannot be honored.
Confidentiality may be granted when justified and approved according to editorial guidelines.
Journalists should not misrepresent themselves or use deceptive methods unless there is an overriding public-interest justification and editorial approval.
Human Rights and Dignity
NCIJ respects the dignity, safety, and rights of individuals.
Special care is taken when reporting on:
- Victims of violence
- Survivors of abuse
- Children
- Refugees and displaced persons
- Vulnerable communities
Public interest must be balanced against the potential risk of harm.
Use of Technology and AI
NCIJ may use technological tools, including artificial intelligence, data analysis systems, and open-source intelligence techniques to support reporting.
However:
- Human editorial oversight is always required.
- AI-generated content must be reviewed before publication.
- AI tools may not replace verification processes.
- Transparency regarding AI use should be maintained where appropriate.
Security and Confidential Information
Journalists must protect confidential information, sensitive materials, and source identities.
NCIJ follows secure communication and information-handling practices to reduce risks to sources, staff, and partners.
Transparency and Accountability
We believe accountability begins with ourselves.
NCIJ publishes corrections when necessary, discloses relevant funding relationships, and maintains transparent editorial policies.
