- Posts claiming the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is importing contaminated beef from Argentina are based on speculation, not evidence, so they cannot be rated true or false at this time.
- Trump announced in August 2026 he “concluded a deal” to import 300,000 metric tons of beef to the U.S. to lower beef prices. He did not name which country or countries from which the U.S. would be importing this beef. Some social media users may have assumed that at least some of this imported beef would come from Argentina because the Trump administration already increased Argentinian beef imports in February 2026.
- The claim that the Argentinian beef allegedly being imported is contaminated seems to stem from an incident in March 2026 in which China suspended shipments from a single meatpacking plant in Argentina because it detected an antibiotic banned in both countries on a sample from a single beef shipment. While there has been little follow-up on this, it’s apparent this suspension was not applied to all Argentinian beef. Major Argentinian newspapers reported that the suspension didn’t even apply to other meatpacking plants owned by the same company.
- Many social media posts spreading these claims attached a video of Trump responding to a question about the well-being of American farmers under an increase of beef imports by saying, “Argentina is dying.” This is a real video, but it’s from October 2025 and unrelated to Trump’s more-recent announcement.
- Snopes emailed the Trump administration asking for clarification on which country or countries it had reached deals with to increase beef imports. We will update this story if receive an answer to our request.
In late August 2026, people on social media brought up concerns regarding beef from Argentina in connection with a recent Truth Social post from U.S. President Donald Trump announcing he made deals to temporarily increase beef imports to the United States.
According to one Facebook post (archived), Trump said the U.S. would buy Argentinian beef, specifically. The post then claimed “reports have circulated about a 22-ton shipment of Argentine beef being rejected by China after authorities allegedly detected traces of an antibiotic that is banned under Chinese food-safety rules.” Many Snopes readers sent us emails asking whether these claims were accurate.
The full Facebook post read:
Trump says, “We’ll buy Argentinian beef.”
And that immediately raises an uncomfortable question: exactly which beef are we talking about?
Because reports have circulated about a 22-ton shipment of Argentine beef being rejected by China after authorities allegedly detected traces of an antibiotic that is banned under Chinese food-safety rules. If that reporting is accurate, people are understandably going to ask whether rejected shipments could somehow end up being redirected elsewhere.
That doesn’t mean the beef Trump is talking about is connected to that specific shipment, and there’s no evidence in this statement alone proving any link. But the timing makes the question impossible to ignore.
American consumers deserve transparency about where imported meat comes from, how it is tested, and whether it meets U.S. safety standards before it reaches grocery stores.
So yes, Argentina may want access to the American market.
But before anyone celebrates cheaper beef, maybe we should ask one simple question:
Are we buying what someone else already refused?
Posts on other social media platforms, such as Reddit (archived), made the same claim. Some posts, including on Instagram (archived) and X (archived), also displayed a video purporting to show Trump speaking with a reporter on the subject. When asked whether buying Argentinian beef benefits Argentina or American farmers more, Trump’s answer began, “Argentina is fighting for its life.”
We determined that the video is authentic, but that the interview took place in 2025, not 2026, so Trump’s statement about Argentina fighting for its life wasn’t directly related to his more-recent announcement about beef imports.
Moreover, neither Trump nor the White House has specified which country or countries Trump allegedly made beef import deals with. In the absence of these pieces of information, we are unable to rate this claim true or false.
The posts also alleged there were reports that China had rejected shipments of Argentinian beef because of contamination. China did reject a single shipment of Argentinian beef in February 2026 after it found the product was contaminated with a chemical banned in both China and Argentina. But China continued importing beef from Argentina, which indicates that the country that detected the contamination and rejected the shipment in the first place does not perceive this to be an ongoing or widespread issue with Argentinian beef.
Below, we break down what we’ve learned from our research into each claim made by the posts:
Trump’s beef import announcement
On Aug. 21, 2026, Trump posted to Truth Social (archived) that he had made a deal to lower the price of ground beef for Americans by importing up to 300,000 metric tons of it. The post, in full, read:
Today, I concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families. As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history. As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP
Notably, Trump did not name which countries he had “concluded a deal” with and would import the beef from, or how many countries the U.S. would be importing this beef from.
Snopes reached out to the White House by email to ask for a list of countries from which the U.S. would be importing beef and did not receive a reply prior to publishing. We’ll update this story if we receive the information.
As of Aug. 25, the Trump administration has yet to issue any executive orders or announce details of the plan beyond what Trump posted. Until the administration releases such details, we don’t know where exactly the planned increase in beef imports will come from.
Why Argentina could be a popular guess for the imports
Trump already increased imports of a particular beef product from Argentina earlier in 2026.
On Feb. 6, the Trump administration released a proclamation increasing imports of lean beef trimmings from Argentina by 80,000 metric tons for 2026.
Much like the reasoning Trump cited in his August Truth Social post, the administration argued the increased imports in February were necessary to replenish the U.S. cattle herd and reduce beef prices for consumers.
One shipment of Argentinian beef rejected by China
For this particular claim, it’s important to pair the single contamination incident referenced above with the broader context of the beef trade between Argentina and China.
In March 2026, China suspended beef imports from a single facility owned by Argentinian meatpacker ArreBeef after detecting the antibiotic chloramphenicol in one 22-ton container, according to Argentina’s two largest newspapers, Clarín and La Nación. People on social media correctly noted that the antibiotic is banned for use in animals raised for meat consumption.
Many social posts left out the fact that the antibiotic has been banned altogether in Argentina since 1995. Argentinian authorities investigated the incident and traced the source of the meat, leaving open the possibility that the test that found the antibiotic may have been a false positive.
While Snopes was unable to uncover the findings of that investigation, it appears there were few to no hiccups in Chinese imports of Argentinian beef over the incident. China suspended beef imports from the one ArreBeef plant that the country was still importing beef from. However, it continued accepting beef imports from another ArreBeef meatpacking plant. In July 2026, China authorized shipments from new Argentinian meatpacking plants and accepted its first shipment in August.
There have been no reports of a wider Chinese ban on Argentinian beef imports.
Video of Trump saying ‘Argentina is dying’ is from 2025
The video of Trump telling a reporter “Argentina is dying” when asked about the well-being of American farmers is genuine, but it’s almost a year old as of this writing and unrelated to Trump’s most-recent announcement about increasing beef imports.
In October 2025, while speaking with reporters on Air Force One, Trump said his administration was thinking about making a deal to increase beef imports, specifically from Argentina, in order to lower beef prices for American consumers. At 12 seconds into an Associated Press YouTube video of the exchange, a reporter asks Trump, “What do you have to say to U.S. farmers who feel that the deal is benefiting Argentina more than it is them?”
Trump’s response in full, as transcribed by the American Presidency Project, was:
Argentina is fighting for its life, young lady. You don’t know anything about it. They’re fighting for their life. Nothing is benefiting Argentina. They’re fighting for their life.
Do you understand what that means? They have no money. They have no anything. They’re fighting so hard to survive. If I can help them survive in a free world—I happen to like the President of Argentina. I think he’s trying to do the best he can. But don’t make it sound like they’re doing great. They are dying. All right? They’re dying.
As stated earlier in this article, Trump announced several months later that his administration was, in fact, increasing imports of lean beef tailings from Argentina for 2026.
