FSRU name revealed as Europe’s new LNG terminal edges closer to completion

Poland’s gas transmission system operator (TSO), Gaz-System, has revealed the name of a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), destined to be part of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal located in the Gulf of Gdańsk.

Gaz-System has chosen Solidarity as the name of the first FSRU unit to be installed in the Bay of Gdańsk, describing it as more than a symbolic reference to the history of Gdańsk. This name is said to reflect the cooperation between the countries of the region and shared responsibility for building a resilient Europe at a time when energy supply security has become a key geopolitical challenge.

Miłosz Motyka, Minister of Energy, commented: “The first Polish floating gas terminal (FSRU) is not only a symbol of our growing position in Central and Eastern Europe, but also a symbol of solidarity in the face of common threats – especially those coming from the East. Poland has become a leader in our region in the energy sector.

“We are building advanced gas and fuel infrastructure, as well as new generation capacity in the form of renewable sources and the first Polish nuclear reactors. The Solidarity terminal will become another important element of this system for the common security of ourselves and our neighbors.”

The FSRU Solidarity is expected to enable the reception of LNG from virtually any direction in the world from 2028, increasing the flexibility of the Polish gas system and the entire Baltic Sea region.

Wojciech Wrochna, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Energy and Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, said: “Europe has learned its lesson from the crises of recent years. Energy independence is not a given and requires consistent, long-term actions and well-thought-out investments.

“The FSRU terminal in the Bay of Gdańsk strengthens the security of Poland and our partners in the region, and the name ‘Solidarity’ aptly captures the idea behind this project – the belief that Europe’s resilience is built together.”

The emerging FSRU terminal is anticipated to be one of the pillars of a new energy security architecture in Europe, as investments of this type are no longer merely infrastructure projects, according to Gaz-System.

The Polish player claims that such investments have become a component of states’ strategic resilience and a response to changing geopolitical conditions, as national security increasingly begins with energy security.

Sławomir Hinc, President of Management Board of Gaz-System, underlined: “The FSRU terminal is a strategic project not only for Poland, but also for the entire Central and Eastern European region. With this investment, we are increasing our supply diversification capabilities and building infrastructure that will serve the region for decades to come.

“The name ‘Solidarity’ emphasizes that energy security is not a purely national issue today – it requires cooperation, mutual responsibility, solidarity, and thinking from a regional perspective.”

The TSO emphasizes that the FSRU name reflects the international nature of the project and the importance of the FSRU terminal for the region’s energy security, which extends beyond the domestic level.

The FSRU Solidarity, being built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea and chartered by Gaz-System from Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), will provide regasification services in the Gulf of Gdansk for at least 15 years.

The TSO underlines that the unit will become a key element of Poland’s energy infrastructure, strengthening the security of gas supplies and the country’s position on the European energy map.
