Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork into one

    ZDNET’s key takeaways

    • Anthropic is rolling Claude Cowork back into regular Claude.
    • If you prefer regular chat, your experience shouldn’t change.
    • Anthropic also launched Claude Docs.

If you’ve gotten attached to the original, more limited Claude chat interface, Anthropic has some bad news: the company is rolling Claude Cowork and chat into a single, all-powerful Claude known as… Claude. And there’s apparently nothing it can’t do.

“You don’t have to choose where a task goes. Claude does more of the work,” Anthropic’s announcement said. The change also applies to Artifacts and is starting with the Pro and Max plans over the coming weeks; the company said more plans will follow.

Also: I use Anthropic’s Claude AI tools for very different jobs: How to pick between models, Code, and Cowork

Inside this super-Claude, you’ll also find the brand-new Claude Docs, which puts Anthropic more seriously in the running to be an AI-first Google Suite rival. OpenAI circulated rumors last summer that it had a similar goal, though it’s unclear where those plans stand.

Inside the new one-stop shop, users will be able to access Claude Design and generate slides, which Anthropic said you can “present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF.” Docs, Slides, and Design in the new Claude are in beta for paid plans.

(Disclosure: Ziff Davis, ZDNET’s parent company, filed an April 2025 lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.)

So why the merge? Anthropic launched Cowork in January as a non-coding-specific answer to Claude Code, to give other types of tasks a heavier-lift productivity agent with more capabilities than Claude chat. The company moved Cowork to the cloud in July, noting that an overwhelming majority of the tasks it was used for were not coding-related. Now, it may make more sense for the company to manage a single Claude entity with the agentic capabilities that more users demand.

“We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged,” Anthropic said. “Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have.”

Also: I let Anthropic’s Claude Cowork loose on my files, and it was both brilliant and scary

Now, every separate tool you use is accessible from one starting point, sort of like distinct modes within a singular interface, rather than toggle-based apps that can’t seamlessly pick up where one left off. The goal seems to be simplicity: a central location for projects, and now documents, that Claude generates.

“Anything you make with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone,” Anthropic said.

If none of this appeals to you, don’t panic: You can still use Claude Design as a standalone, as normal. For those who rely on chat and not Cowork, Anthropic said your experience shouldn’t change.
