Too cute to be true? Video really shows rhino and tiny deer headbutting

In September 2026, social media users shared a video of an unusual animal encounter. The clip showed a rhino and a much smaller muntjac deer appearing to play together and butt heads in the snow.

“A tiny 13 kg Chinese muntjac deer playfully challenged a 1.7-ton rhino named Maruśka at the Wrocław Zoo in Poland,” one Reddit post (archived) captioned the video.

Since January 2026, the clip has appeared in posts on X, Threads, Facebook and YouTube. Overlaid text in a YouTube video described (archived) the encounter as “David vs. Goliath,” while some social media users wondered if the footage was generated using artificial-intelligence tools. For example, one Reddit user wrote (archived): “Saw this on another reddit post and many people were saying it’s AI, but I’m really not sure it is.”

However, the video was real. It showed Maruśka, a female Indian rhinoceros, and Tata (Polish for “Dad”), a male Chinese muntjac, a small deer species.

The footage originated from Zoo Wrocław in Poland. Managers of the zoo’s official Facebook and Instagram pages posted the clip on Jan. 8, 2026. In the caption (translated from Polish), the zoo framed the scene as a humorous confidence mismatch and said the muntjac’s bravado was driven by mating-season hormones:

Where does this bravado come from in the male Chinese muntjac?

It’s nature calling! His partner is in heat, and testosterone is surging in the bachelor. He needs to burn off energy and show who’s boss – even if his sparring partner weighs 1.7 tons. Who would have thought there was such a warrior in such a small body?

The clip was widely covered by national and local Polish news media outlets that cited the zoo as the source.

After the video went viral online, Zoo Wrocław published a follow-up article on Jan. 12, 2026, crediting the clip to employee Kamil Guzik, a foreman in the zoo’s carnivorous mammals section.

Wrocław.pl — an online news portal in Wrocław, the city where the video was captured — spoke with Maciej Okupnik, a hooved-animal keeper at Zoo Wrocław, who explained why the two species shared a space.

The website quoted Okupnik as saying muntjacs and rhinos can live in proximity to one another both at the zoo and in the wild. He said muntjacs are territorial and mark areas with scent glands near their eyes, while rhinos typically tolerate other animals in their territory because “they’re not afraid of anyone.” He reportedly described the encounter as theatrical and said similar standoffs had occurred before but this was the first time staff had filmed one.

TVN24, a Polish news media channel, said Okupnik emphasized that the male muntjac’s behavior was driven by a mix of territorial instinct and hormones because his partner was “in heat.” He said the animal’s priority was to defend his space and impress the female, not to challenge the rhino, and that Maruśka was not aggressive toward him in day-to-day interactions. Okupnik added that the rhino appeared to treat the lunges as an invitation to play, with no signs of real aggression. At one point, Maruśka snorted as if to signal she had enough and simply walked away.
