The State Department plans to expand access to limited-edition U.S. passports that feature President Trump’s image, the department said on Thursday.
The commemorative passports, intended to honor the nation’s 250th, were released earlier this month in Washington. An additional 250,000 of them will be made available, the department said. A department representative said Friday that the move came after 30,000 Americans phoned a passport call center since July 4 looking to apply for that specific passport.
The documents, which the White House has referred to as “patriot passports,” feature a portrait of Mr. Trump with his signature underneath and the text of the Declaration of Independence behind him. The back of the booklet commemorates the semiquincentennial and includes an image of the founders signing the Declaration of Independence.
The passports were originally available exclusively at the Washington Passport Agency, which began issuing about 40,000 of them in early July. Their release drew supporters of Mr. Trump eager to have a passport with his image on it and angered some applicants who were unaware they would receive anything other than a standard U.S. passport.
The commemorative passports, issued at no extra cost, will be available at in-person application events held in August and September at passport offices across 19 states, including California, Georgia, Michigan, Texas and New York, as well as in Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Appointments are required and must be made over the phone.
Americans who apply for a passport by mail, online, at a post office or at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad will not receive a commemorative passport, the State Department said.
