Petrobras taps Strohm for up to 1,500-meter deepwater TCP trial offshore Brazil

Dutch thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) manufacturer Strohm has been hired on an assignment, covering the supply, qualification and offshore trial of thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) for water injection and gas lift applications in Brazil’s deepwater post-salt province, in a project that will test the technology at water depths of up to 1,500 meters.

Petrobras has booked Strohm and its subsidiary, Strohm Brasil, on a contract to supply thermoplastic composite pipe for the Brazilian post-salt cluster, with the agreement also entailing qualification testing, project engineering, field services, and support for offshore trials and installation.

The TCP, which will be used for water injection and gas lift applications offshore Brazil, at water depths of up to 1,500 meters, will be assessed under actual operating conditions, including handling and ability to be installed from typical pipe lay vessels in Petrobras’ fleet.

Renato Bastos, Vice President of Strohm Brasil, commented: “Winning this contract is a significant endorsement of Strohm’s technology and capabilities, as well as an important milestone in our roadmap, paving the way to further developments in country. Petrobras is a recognised expert in flexible pipe solutions, and we are proud to have earned their confidence in our thermoplastic composite pipe products and our team’s expertise.

“It is a clear reflection of how Strohm has matured into a professional supplier of high-performance flexible pipe solutions, with the capabilities and expertise to meet the industry’s growing demand for advanced and reliable products.”

Made from carbon or glass fibre reinforced with polyethylene or polyamide, thermoplastic composite pipes are lighter and easier to handle than conventional flexible and rigid pipe systems, as their spoolable, non-corrosive design can provide long-term reliability while eliminating routine maintenance requirements, without compromising the ability to carry out ongoing pipeline integrity inspections.

Martin van Onna, Strohm’s CEO, remarked: “This contract award is a testament to the strong collaboration between our two companies and demonstrates Petrobras’ commitment to bringing advanced pipe technology into its operations to improve operational efficiency and reduce production costs.”
