Norway’s CO2 transport and storage project gets second Swedish customer

Northern Lights, a joint venture (JV) encompassing Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, has signed an agreement with Öresundskraft Kraft & Värme, owned by the City of Helsingborg, for the transport of CO2 from a waste-to-energy plant in Sweden to Norway for storage under the seabed.

The CO2 will be captured and liquefied at Öresundskraft’s Filbornaverket waste-to-energy facility in Helsingborg before being transported by truck to the Port of Halland in Halmstad. From here, Northern Lights will transport the CO2 by ship to the receiving terminal in Øygarden, Norway, for injection and storage in a designated North Sea reservoir 2,600 meters below the seabed.

“The agreement with Öresundskraft is an important milestone for Northern Lights and it further strengthens the Nordics as a leading CCS region. Öresundskraft’s project contributes to the development of a portfolio approach with shared infrastructure. This will be an enabler of further growth of the CCS industry,“ said Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights JV.

The Filbornaverket facility processes household and industrial waste and generates district heating and electricity for the Helsingborg region. Through the carbon capture project, Öresundskraft aims to capture both biogenic and fossil CO2 emissions, contributing to emission reductions and carbon removal efforts.

The agreement, subject to certain agreed requirements, is targeting start-up in the fourth quarter of 2029. Under the deal, Northern Lights will provide transport and storage services for up to 200,000 tons of CO2 per year.

“Northern Lights has been highly responsive to our needs and open to exploring new solutions throughout the process. Sharing infrastructure and finding solutions that work for multiple operators will be key. Northern Lights is playing an important role in making this possible, and we greatly appreciate their willingness to work with us to develop these solutions,” said Stefan Håkansson, CEO of Öresundskraft.

Öresundskraft is the second Swedish customer for Northern Lights services, following the commercial cross-border transport and storage agreement with the Swedish district energy provider Stockholm Exergi signed last year.

Northern Lights started the first injections of liquid CO2 for storage in 2025 and now, with the Öresundskraft agreement, has seven industrial customers in four countries.
