Jan De Nul, a dredging and offshore contractor, is entering the carbon capture and storage (CCS) market, with offshore rock installation works that one of its vessels is carrying out for the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), a joint venture of BP, Equinor and TotalEnergies, in relation to a development described as the UK’s first offshore CCS project.
Jan De Nul has announced that it is contributing for the first time to a CCS project that will transport CO2 from industrial areas to permanent storage beneath the North Sea, as a subcontractor to Saipem, with its Simon Stevin vessel starting to install a protective layer of rock on top of the CO2 pipeline for the Northern Endurance Partnership’s transportation and storage network, which aims to help the UK move towards a carbon-neutral industrial sector.
The company will install rock on top of a pipeline that transports C02 from industrial areas to a storage site beneath the North Sea in the coming months. Saipem is responsible for the project’s offshore execution scope. Northern Endurance Partnership will capture CO2 from industrial areas of Teesside and Humber, on the east coast of England.
Jan De Nul emphasizes that the CO2 is compressed and transported through a network of pipelines to a storage location under the North Sea, where it is injected thousands of meters deep into porous rock formations. The firm is responsible for protecting the pipeline, which has a diameter of one meter, on the seabed of the North Sea.
Using its rock installation vessel, the company will install rock over the coming months with a vertical fall pipe system that places the rock with high precision on the seabed at depths of 30 to 60 meters.

The NEP network is set to initially connect three carbon capture projects in Teesside: NZT Power, H2Teesside and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture. These projects were selected in March 2023 as part of the UK government’s phased approach to developing carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) clusters.
CO2 storage at the development site is expected to begin in 2028. During its initial phase, the facility is planned to store up to 100 million tonnes of CO2 over 25 years in the saline aquifer.
