Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson sentenced to 15 years for child sexual offences | Northern Ireland

Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years for sexual offences against two women who were children when he abused them, paving what was described as a “catastrophic descent into disgrace”.

The sentence at Newry crown court completed the downfall on Thursday of a former Democratic Unionist party (DUP) leader who once dominated unionism in Northern Ireland.

Donaldson, 63, was sentenced to 11 years for rape against complainant B and four years for offences against complainant A, to be served consecutively. He is to remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

He had reached the “very height of public office” before a “catastrophic descent into disgrace”, the judge, Paul Ramsey said.

The former Lagan Valley MP had shown no remorse or empathy, he said. “There has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man to at least provide his victims with some crumb of comfort.”

He paid tribute to the victims, who were in court. “It is only through the courage, resourcefulness, and determination of two young women that you’ve been brought to justice in respect of the crimes you committed against them when they were children,” he said.

The head of the Public Prosecution Service’s serious crime unit, Catherine Kierans, lauded the victims’ courage in coming forward to seek justice. “Jeffrey Donaldson held a prominent public position,” she said. “This case shows that sexual abuse can be hidden behind a facade of respectability.”

Donaldson, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and pink tie, showed no emotion and was escorted from the dock by two custody officers. He was returned to Maghaberry prison, where he has been held since his conviction.

He was found guilty in June of 18 counts of sexual abuse including one count of rape, spanning a period from 1985 to 2008. He has denied all wrongdoing and plans to appeal.

Speaking outside court, Det Ch Insp Leah Crothers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said Donaldson had manipulated his victims and exploited their trust. Police and the criminal justice system had sent a clear message, she said. “No-one is above the law.”

Statements from the complainants, read by Crothers, detailed enduring trauma. Complainant B said the abuse had taken away her ability to trust people. “I stood up many years ago because for me this is about drawing a line in the sand and knowing that the Donaldson’s [sic] can no longer hurt anyone else.”

Complainant A said her childhood had been stolen. “I learned to survive by shutting away my emotions, trusting no one and expecting people to hurt me … I should never have had to become this strong.

“The last few years have been nothing short of a battle … But those responsible do not control me now … The cycle is being broken and it ends with me.”

The DUP said its former leader had committed “vile and disgusting crimes” and expressed sympathy for the complainants. “He deserves every day of the lengthy prison sentence he has to serve following the guilty verdict for preying on innocent child victims.”

The jury in the four-week trial found that Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor, aided and abetted his offending. The 60-year-old was deemed unfit to stand trial on mental health grounds and faced a trial of the facts, which tests evidence but does not result in a criminal conviction.

She is due to return to court on 13 November 2026 for a hearing in relation to the conclusion of her case.

The case shredded the reputation of an establishment figure who was knighted and played a key role at Westminster during post-Brexit negotiations over Northern Ireland’s position in the UK.

During the trial Complainant B said she was raped when she was of primary school age and was of secondary school age when Donaldson lifted up her top and fondled her breasts. The jury heard that Donaldson’s wife witnessed part of the latter incident and walked away.

Complainant A said she was of primary school age when Donaldson began to be “physical” with her. She recalled waking up in the night with a sexual feeling and having nightmares about “men doing horrible things to children”.

The trial heard that in the 1990s the victim told a pastor about the abuse, after which Donaldson apologised to her at a Christian centre in County Antrim. Prosecutors also told the jury of a letter Donaldson wrote to Complainant A in 2020 in which he expressed regret for causing “hurt, pain and distress” and asked forgiveness for his “sinful nature”.

At the trial he denied wrongdoing and said the apologies related to other matters.

The prosecutor, Rosemary Walsh, told the trial both victims kept memories “locked away inside” until turning points in adulthood prompted the decision to report the offences to police in 2024.

Until his arrest in March 2024, Donaldson embodied unionist probity. Born into a Presbyterian family in Kilkeel, he married Eleanor in 1987 and served apprenticeships in the Ulster Unionist party before defecting to the DUP in 2004.

Donaldson was knighted for political services in 2016 and became DUP leader in 2021, before resigning in 2024. After his conviction, King Charles stripped him of his knighthood in July.
