DNV augments subsea toolkit with Equinor’s wellhead fatigue tech

Norwegian assurance and risk management company DNV is expanding its subsea technology offering by buying Equinor’s wellhead fatigue software, which the compatriot energy giant has developed and used for the past 15 years.

DNV has agreed to acquire WellSpot from Equinor. This wellhead fatigue software, renamed Wellhead Fatigue Manager, brings well data, analysis, and standardized workflows into one place, so operators can track and manage accumulated fatigue damage throughout the life of a subsea well.

The platform integrates DNV-RP-E104, the recommended practice for wellhead fatigue analysis in use by more than 400 companies in 55 countries, and replaces fragmented, one-off engineering assessments with continuous, data-driven fatigue management.

The Norwegian assurance and risk management firm emphasizes that each operator’s data stays with that operator and its authorized partners. No data is shared between companies. Currently, Equinor and Aker BP are the first users of this wellhead tool.

DNV will continue to develop the software for continuous monitoring of subsea wellhead integrity as more operators come on board, supporting safer operations and more efficient use of existing subsea infrastructure.

The company offers digital solutions for advanced structural analysis of submarine pipelines, cables and umbilicals across all lifetime phases of subsea equipment, including the operational phase and service life after permitted lifetime.

Equinor is determined to expand Norwegian hydrocarbon resources, as illustrated by its latest collaboration pact with Aker BP and Vår Energi, which enables the trio to jointly explore high-impact prospects in pursuit of more oil and gas.
