Did Trump order USS Abraham Lincoln sailors to sign NDAs before they can leave ship?

    Claim:

In August 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln to sign NDAs before they were allowed to leave the aircraft carrier.

    Rating:

In mid-August 2026, social media users circulated a claim that U.S. President Donald Trump ordered sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln to sign nondisclosure agreements before they were allowed to leave the aircraft carrier.

One Facebook post spreading the rumor was captioned, “Trump is making USS Lincoln sailors sign an NDA before they can get off the ship. #navy #ussabrahamlincoln #military #nda #fascism.”

Social media posts claim Trump demanded sailors on USS Abraham Lincoln sign NDSs before they can leave the ship.

Variations of the claim also spread on social media platforms, including Threads, X and Instagram. We also received emails from readers asking whether the claim was true.

In short, it was not. We found no evidence Trump ordered sailors to sign NDAs before coming ashore, and the rumor originated from a Facebook post with a “satire” label.

The earliest version of the claim we found came from a Facebook post by Karl E. Rominger. Its headline read “TRUMP ORDERS USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN SAILORS TO SIGN NDAs BEFORE COMING ASHORE.”

    The post’s text stated:

Donald Trump announced today that sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln will not be permitted to leave the ship until they sign legally binding nondisclosure agreements promising never to say anything “negative, nasty or insufficiently beautiful” about their deployment.

Especially off-limits: the mysterious laundry-room fire. Sailors are specifically forbidden from suggesting the fire was anything other than a completely ordinary laundry-room fire that absolutely, positively had nothing whatsoever to do with Iran. They are also forbidden from wondering aloud whether the carrier remained at sea while repairs were completed so nobody standing on a dock with a cellphone could photograph whatever definitely did not happen.

“Nothing happened,” Trump explained. “And anybody saying something happened will spend the remainder of their natural life at Fort Leavenworth for talking about the thing that never happened.”
Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance immediately described requiring thousands of returning sailors to sign secrecy agreements on the gangway as “totally normal military procedure.” Hegseth added that anyone asking why such an agreement would be necessary if nothing happened clearly hates the troops.

Trump initially claimed the NDA was his idea before explaining that Susie Wiles developed it, Hegseth approved it, Rubio translated it into diplomatic language, and Vance volunteered to explain on television why Americans should never believe anything sailors tell their own families.

Because nothing says nothing happened quite like threatening everybody who was there if they talk about it.

    (Facebook user Karl E. Rominger)

The post explicitly labeled its content as satirical. It ended: “Follow Karl E. Rominger for more news, satire and uncomfortable questions. #KarlTalks #Satire #USSAbrahamLincoln #Trump #Politics.”

Moreover, the Facebook profile page describes its content as “Political parody, sharp commentary” and it features numerous other fictional stories written in a similar style.

Story inspired by real-life fire on another carrier?

There was a real laundry-room fire aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier during the Iran conflict. It happened on the USS Gerald R. Ford, when a fire broke out in the ship’s laundry room on March 12, 2026, which U.S. Central Command said was not related to combat.

The Ford later stopped in Greece for repairs, and more than 200 sailors were treated for smoke inhalation.

The satirical Facebook post may have been referencing this incident when mentioning a “mysterious laundry-room fire,” but we found no evidence confirming that. In any case, the fire happened on a different carrier months before August 2026.

    Abraham Lincoln deployment context

The rumor spread while the USS Abraham Lincoln already was drawing attention over its unusually long deployment. As of this writing, the aircraft carrier had spent about nine months at sea, and reports described food and supply shortages and low morale among its crew. Other claims about conditions aboard the carrier also circulated online. For instance, in August 2026, we investigated reports that sailors tried to go overboard during the extended deployment.

All in all, certain concerns about the USS Abraham Lincoln’s extended deployment and its conditions in August 2026 were well-documented. However, the allegation that Trump ordered its sailors to sign NDAs before being allowed ashore originated from an account that labels its content as satire.

For further reading, we have previously investigated other fabricated posts from the same account. For instance, in June 2026, we fact-checked a fabricated screenshot claiming Trump said he walked out of an NBC “Meet the Press” interview because reporter Kristen Welker kept staring at his ear.

Because the effectiveness of satire is subjective, we use “originated as satire” or “labeled satire” ratings based on creators’ description of their work. It’s your call on whether you agree.
