The DPD’s website and social media feeds on Facebook, X and Instagram frequently posts alerts and warnings about specific police activity, curfews and community engagement events. Snopes’ thorough search of the website and social feeds showed no posts warning about the alleged gang initiation stabbings.
A search of Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo revealed no credible reports of stabbings in Detroit linked to gang initiation, which would have been widely reported in the local media if the police had actually issued such a warning.
We found reports of two stabbings in local Detroit media in August 2026, neither of which mentioned suspected gang activity. The victim in one report was a male. The other report was about a teenage girl reportedly stabbing a man.
It’s possible the August 2026 headlines were being misrepresented in social media posts that became an instance of copypasta — a copied-and-pasted piece of text meant to spur further shares — as users began to spread it online.
