Democrats are expected to easily retain New York’s 12th district, currently held by retiring Rep. Jerrold Nadler. And yet, outside groups have already spent $41.2 million on the race thanks to a competitive primary that featured familiar names and a debate over AI policy.

Micha Lasher won 39.7% of the vote, defeating fellow state Assemblyman Alex Bores, Jack Schlossberg (grandson of John F. Kennedy) and Republican-turned-Trump-antagonist George Conway, among others.

Think Big, a super PAC supported by elements of the AI industry such as OpenAI and backing Democratic candidates, spent $8 million to oppose Bores – nearly half of its total spending so far this year. Rival AI company Anthropic is backing another super PAC network. Its Democratic arm – the Jobs and Democracy PAC – spent $13.2 million to support Bores, who shares Anthropic’s view that the industry requires more oversight.

The Republican primary in Kentucky’s 4th district drew $26 million in outside spending. Ed Gallrein ousted Rep. Thomas Massie, who drew intense criticism from President Donald Trump for his work on the Epstein files. The Kentucky 4th PAC spent $6.7 million to support Massie, while an anti-Massie super PAC – MAGA KY– spent $7.5 million.
