Yet – in public – Europe’s leaders have remained cautiously quiet.Though not, it seems, out of any lack of support for Mark Carney.A number of Europe’s leaders, like Finland’s president – but also French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, herself once a true Trump fan – are involved in behind-the-scene chats with Carney about deepening relations, I’m told. But – and it’s a big but – no leading European politician wants to stick his or her neck out for Carney in public right now and risk having voters at home blame them for possibly incurring the wrath…
Mayors and other local political leaders could be given powers to oversee water companies under plans being considered by the government.Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s plan is to create nine new regional bodies responsible for planning, setting objectives, and holding water companies to account. The idea was a key recommendation of Sir John Cunliffe’s Independent Water Commission published in June last year.Improving the water industry has been a focus for Burnham since he took to power, as water customers in England and Wales continue to face steep bill hikes. But there has been little detail of what that could look like, short of…
The ads were identified by the regulator using its AI-powered “Active Ad Monitoring System”, which proactively searches for ads which might violate UK rules. It said the five ads it were banned had depicted women irresponsibly, and were likely to cause serious or widespread offence. One ad for an AI companion generator, developed by Animcha Ltd, was also found to have portrayed someone under 18 in a sexual way, the ASA said.It presented the synthetic female character as someone users could “customise” and instruct, combining sexualised imagery with childlike clothing and objects. Two ads for an AI portrait generation tool called Nexaipic encouraged…
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned security teams that ransomware gangs have now joined ongoing attacks exploiting a critical VMware vCenter vulnerability patched in July. Broadcom addressed the security flaw (tracked as CVE-2026-59310) on July 29, describing it as a critical directory traversal vulnerability in the vCenter Syslog server that unauthenticated attackers can exploit to execute arbitrary code. The company also warned customers in a supplemental FAQ at the time to treat fixing CVE-2026-59310 as an emergency and install patches as soon as possible. Two weeks later, digital forensics and incident response (DFIR) company QUIRSO reported finding…
US prosecutors on Tuesday charged two former Robinhood engineers with commodities fraud and wire fraud for allegedly using confidential information about upcoming cryptocurrency listings to profit from perpetual futures trades on Hyperliquid. According to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Hefu Chai and Huaisong “Jerry” Xiang bought perpetual contracts linked to tokens ahead of Robinhood Crypto listings. The DOJ alleged each profited more than $50,000 from the trades between 2025 and 2026. The DOJ said Chai and Xiang had access to a private company Slack channel containing information about planned listings. Prosecutors allege they used that information to open long positions on…
Researchers have found that the human brain begins undergoing broad changes in the way its genome is regulated starting in midlife. The findings may help explain why age is the strongest risk factor for neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. In a new study published in Science, scientists used advanced single-cell methods to examine gene regulation and three-dimensional genome organization in individual cells from the human hippocampus, a brain region essential for learning and memory. By analyzing samples from adults across a wide range of ages, the team created one of the most detailed pictures yet of how genome regulation…
Second time’s the charm? On Aug. 25, Maine’s Public Utilities Commission selected winning proposals in a years-long effort to turn more of northern Maine’s howling winds into energy that can power population centers in the southern part of the state and region. The PUC selected one developer to build 800 megawatts of new onshore wind energy in Aroostook County—enough to power over 300,000 homes—and another to build a new transmission line capable of carrying up to 1,200 MW of power to Southern Maine and New England. Six hundred MW of the first tranche of power are reserved for Maine. Advocates…
Further to Robert Ames’s article (I co-founded an orchestra 18 years ago. Since then, I’ve seen doors close for working-class musicians, 9 September), I have seen first-hand both the transformative power of music education and the fragility of its provision.I am the chair of trustees of Making Music, Changing Lives (MMCL), a Cardiff-based charity established in 2009 to provide musical opportunities for children and young people in the low-income communities of Ely and Caerau. Around 40 young people are loaned instruments for free and they receive free or heavily subsidised weekly tuition from highly-qualified teachers, and the opportunity to play…
