Under a recent legal settlement, Florida will have to adopt new plans for addressing pollution in nine of the hundreds of freshwater springs in the state that constitute one of the largest concentrations of springs in the world. The agreement between environmental groups and the state Department of Environmental Protection, announced earlier this month, applies to seven springs on the Suwannee River in rural north Florida, as well as the Wekiwa and Rock springs outside of Orlando in central Florida. The settlement addresses the two largest sources of nitrogen pollution plaguing Florida’s iconic springs: agricultural lands and septic systems. The…

Fingleton stressed that the U.K. should not impose more stringent interpretations of these regulations than rival nuclear markets in the EU. This follows supplier EDF paying out up to £700 million to protect marine life at Hinkley Point C — including an infamous “fish disco.” “We don’t always have a trade-off between the environment and building things, but we often create an artificial one by making it very site-specific,” Fingleton warned. He argued that with a reformed nuclear framework developers could have instead spent “a fraction of that on other measures to improve fish in the river,” this would “have…

Griffith – who was appointed as shadow chancellor last month – told the BBC, Labour had raised taxes at its last two Budgets and that the “pips are well and truly squeaking”. In addition to ruling out tax rises, he said the government should “pause job-destroying red tape” adding: “Whatever its intentions it is causing a real chill in the vacancy market.”The Conservatives pointed to figures from the Federation of Small Businesses estimating that tax compliance costs small businesses £25bn a year and the average small business spends 44 hours a year on tax admin. It turns out that the one thing that can apparently bridge Washington’s partisan divide is AM radio. U.S. automakers may be forced to build AM radio into new vehicles within the next year. The House of Representatives, in a rare instance of bipartisan support, overwhelmingly approved legislation on Wednesday that would require new cars, trucks, and SUVs to be built with AM radio at no additional charge to consumers. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, which would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to require automakers to include AM radio in new passenger vehicles as standard equipment, will…

Bitcoin’s price swung before settling largely unmoved over a 24-hour period after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates — as expected — for the first time since 2023.  The leading cryptocurrency was recently priced at nearly $75,813 after dropping as low as $75,355 in the hour after the U.S. central bank gave its decision to increase the benchmark federal funds rate to a range of 3.75% to 4%.  Over a seven-day period, the coin is down nearly 4%.  Traders had bet there was a more than 90% chance that the Fed would raise interest rates ahead of its September meeting.…

A new analysis led by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) suggests that liquid nitrogen may be moving upward through cracks and reaching the surface of Pluto near the northern edge of Sputnik Planitia, the enormous heart-shaped glacier that dominates part of the dwarf planet. The findings provide the first evidence that liquid has flowed on Pluto in relatively recent times. The research is based on observations from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft and was led by SwRI Associate Vice President Dr. Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission. “Pluto never stops surprising us,” Lead Author Stern said, “and this new…

It’s been three weeks since the government advisory urging us to start stockpiling in case of emergency – how’s your prep coming along? The Prepare campaign, backed by Wes Streeting, who one imagines gliding through the apocalypse, quiff undisturbed, listed nine essential items, among them wet wipes, first-aid kits and batteries. The World Health Organization, meanwhile, suggests budgeting for 15 litres of water per person per day, so a family of four will need to store upwards of 180 litres to cover the recommended period of three days. The chances of this actually happening seem to me, intuitively, to be…
