A freelance reporter has been fighting a subpoena from the Trump administration seeking to force him to reveal his sources for a New York Times article about a failed top secret mission in North Korea, according to people familiar with the matter. The subpoena, which has not been previously disclosed, reflects the administration’s intensifying campaign to investigate leaks of government secrets by pressuring reporters to divulge their sources. Until President Trump began his second term, federal subpoenas to reporters were exceedingly rare.In February, F.B.I. agents showed up at the New York home of the reporter, Matthew Cole, to deliver the grand…

It’s unknown how much OpenAI considered that behavior prior to the Hugging Face attack. The incident was a teachable moment for ethical AI work — as well as for threat actors.  On July 16, the AI community website Hugging Face reported being targeted by “an autonomous AI agent system” of unknown origin that unleashed a torrent of traffic on its domain, flooding its security logs with more than 17,000 events, some of which ultimately succeeded…

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added foreign-produced mobile robots and networked power inverters to its Covered List on July 28. The move generally prevents new models from receiving the equipment authorization required for import, marketing, or sale in the US. Previously authorized models can still be sold, and devices people already own are unaffected. Federal purchases and use are also unaffected by this FCC action. Previously authorized hardware can keep receiving qualifying security and compatibility updates. FCC rules otherwise exclude covered equipment from certification procedures for Class I and Class II permissive changes. The FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology…

In brief Circle received a limited-purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services. The charter allows Circle to operate a New York trust company that can provide digital asset custody but cannot accept deposits or make loans like a traditional bank. The family of Nancy Guthrie issued a new appeal on Saturday for information on the whereabouts of their missing grandmother, six months after she disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, and a day after local investigators released two purported ransom notes.“Six months ago, someone took her out of her bed in the dead of night. We have lived every moment, every breath, and every heartbeat in agony and despair ever since,” a post on Instagram said.“Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on – because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us…

After a spate of bad polls earlier this summer, President Trump simply declared that they were not true. “MY REAL POLL NUMBERS ARE THE HIGHEST THEY HAVE EVER BEEN,” he wrote on social media, using capital letters as if they would shout away any contrary data.In fact, his real poll numbers are at or near the lowest they have ever been in some nonpartisan surveys. A flurry of new samples in recent days found that Mr. Trump is at the nadir of his presidency, with support from just around a third of Americans as a stalemated war in Iran and…

The scope of cyberattacks on U.S. water systems has grown to include at least seven states and may be far wider, officials and experts warned, as the authorities raced to safeguard the nation’s water supply against an assault that increasingly appeared to be the work of Iran. While there were no indications that any water supply had been altered or made unsafe to drink, state and local officials throughout the country were on high alert for potential problems in vulnerable computers that are commonly used to monitor and adjust water quality, including chemical-treatment levels and water pressure. Minnesota first publicly reported…

Six twentysomethings in East London have built what they say is the anti-San Francisco hacker house. The goal is a “holistic improvement in life,” rather than “12 weeks, Demo Day is coming,” Rowan Aldean, 26, explained.  Intrigued, I spent an afternoon visiting the house, meeting its residents, and doing a vibe check. I arrived after Aldean escorted me through the clean sidewalks of a new East London development to where the six-story building stood facing the water.  The house is called the London Island Founder House — or “Lift House” — and Aldean and his wife, Zahraa, 22, an upcoming…

In this tutorial, we explore how NVIDIA Transformer Engine accelerates transformer workloads by combining fused GPU kernels, BF16 computation, and hardware-aware FP8 execution. We begin by installing Transformer Engine and detecting the active GPU architecture so that we can determine whether the runtime supports TE kernels, FP8 tensor cores, or only the pure-PyTorch fallback path. We then examine core fused components such as te.Linear, te.LayerNorm, te.LayerNormLinear, te.LayerNormMLP, and te.TransformerLayer, while also configuring a delayed-scaling FP8 recipe that manages tensor scaling, amax history, and hybrid E4M3/E5M2 formats. Using these components, we construct a compact GPT-style causal language model, train it on…
