A high court judge has ordered the Home Office to bring an alleged victim of trafficking forcibly removed to France under the “one in one out” scheme back to the UK.It is the first ruling of its kind and could lead to more people affected by the “one in one out” policy being brought back to the UK.The judge, Mr Justice Sheldon, has quashed a Home Office policy change to refuse asylum seekers the right to have their trafficking claims reconsidered after an initial rejection. “I have quashed it so that it is as if it never happened,” he said. The…
A pair of documents issued by the acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, that narrow or dissolve aspects of a deal to resolve President Trump’s lawsuit against the I.R.S. have met the demands of two Republican holdouts.Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas refused to support Mr. Blanche’s nomination unless he committed in writing to dropping a $1.8 billion fund funneling taxpayer money to the president’s allies and putting stricter limits on a part of the plan that provides sweeping protections to Mr. Trump and those in his inner circle from I.R.S. audits.Critics, however, say the written…
Unlock the Editor’s Digest for freeRoula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.Imagine what it’s like being AstraZeneca boss Sir Pascal Soriot. The company you run is doing well — on track to beat a goal of $80bn of annual sales by 2030. A pipeline of almost 200 drug development projects looks pretty full. Yet something is missing: genuine global heft. Time, perhaps, to do a megadeal. Why else would AstraZeneca be considering a merger with Bristol Myers Squibb, as the FT reported over the weekend. After all, Soriot doesn’t need to go shopping to plug…

The long-awaited crypto Clarity Act may be further delayed as August recess fast approaches. Despite optimism last week from top crypto companies — like Coinbase — and backing from top financial institutions, lawmakers appear to be prioritizing other bills to vote on before their five-week break starting Thursday or Friday. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren was even quoted saying in a Sunday Punchbowl News report that “more people in the Senate are beginning to question crypto’s electoral invincibility.” Pro-crypto Republicans, such as Senator Cynthia Lummis, have blasted Democrats for deliberately holding back the bill after members of the party said that…
The Arctic’s frozen ground contains enormous stores of organic carbon. As permafrost thaws and coastlines erode, some of that carbon is carried into the ocean. There, microorganisms can break it down and release greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Until now, scientists have had limited information about how much of this carbon returns to the atmosphere and how much remains trapped in the ocean. Researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute and MARUM – Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen have now examined this process along the permafrost coast of Qikiqtaruk (Herschel Island) in Canada. By…

Reading Time: 3 minutes Editor’s note: This column was excerpted from an open letter sent on July 30, 2026, to Madison city officials. On Aug. 2, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway announced plans to remove barricades and tow vehicles occupying Williamson Street — while relocating memorial items. On July 22 Madison police shot Corey Ruiz on Williamson Street. That shooting should have been a moment of profound self-examination for this city. Instead, what has followed has exposed another failure of leadership. Let me be clear: The shooting raises profound questions about Madison’s use of force and demands a full, independent investigation and…
