High-energy whirlpools speckle the sun’s surface.  New telescope images show characteristic swirls of magnetized plasma across a 19-kilometer-wide patch of the sun’s surface. The observations, reported August 5 in Nature, are the most detailed taken of the sun to date. The images also provide evidence for a type of fluid instability that might explain the sun’s outbursts, such as solar flares and eruptions.   “This instability occurs everywhere at the boundaries of solar magnetic elements,” says astrophysicist David Kuridze of the National Solar Observatory headquartered in Boulder, Colo.   Solar magnetic elements are regions of highly magnetized plasma on the sun’s surface. There are millions of them, and energy from their magnetized plasma can be transferred, stabilized and transformed by swirling motions — a phenomenon called the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.   Sign up for our newsletter We summarize the week’s scientific…

The latest USDA projections show beef imports continuing to rise and exports decline through 2027. The U.S. will import 6.059 billion pounds of beef by the end of this year, up 12.5% from last year, according to projections. The increase in imports has angered one of…

Devolution has become the flavour of the month (The Guardian view on England’s centralised state: Andy Burnham must unbundle it, 31 July). The case is well argued and the need for such reform fits neatly into the situation we find in the Tees Valley – chronic underinvestment, lack of economic growth, depopulation, and so on.But the Tees Valley has had a devolved authority for 10 years and the benefits of devolution have not landed. The Tees Valley authority was issued a best value notice in April 2025, though there’s nothing to show for it.The new-age proponents of devolution, by ignoring how Tees…

The claim that Dr. Anthony Fauci used his staff to solicit cash prizes is unproven. Experts say there is no evidence Fauci broke any ethics laws.  During a July Senate hearing, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., accused Fauci of using his staff at the National Institutes of Health to solicit cash prizes. Hawley appeared to rely on information shared by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who released hundreds of internal NIH emails that, if legitimate, show Fauci’s staff talking about putting together required components for award nomination packages after other scientists had already nominated Fauci for the awards. Some of those awards…

Trump’s participation in the June G7 summit in Evian was praised as a high point in the relationship, with the U.S. president showing signs of support for Ukraine and prolonging his visit to France to join Macron and his wife for dinner at the gilded Versailles Palace. “We have our ups and downs in our relationship with the U.S.,” said a former French official, who has kept informed of the transatlantic relationship.
