Detroit police didn’t issue warning about gang initiation trend victimizing women

    Claim:

The Detroit Police Department issued a warning about a “gang initiation” trend of young men stabbing women in Detroit in August 2026.

    Rating:

Claims that the Detroit Police Department issued a public service announcement warning about a rash of stabbings victimizing women circulated online in August 2026.

Facebook users claimed Detroit police said there was a “gang initiation going on in Detroit right now,” and the stabbings were allegedly a part of the process. Multiple accounts that shared the claim urged women to “be aware of your surroundings at all times.”

The claim that Detroit police issued such a warning was false.

The Detroit Police Department told Snopes via email that the posts were not accurate.

The DPD’s website and social media feeds on Facebook, X and Instagram frequently posts alerts and warnings about specific police activity, curfews and community engagement events. Snopes’ thorough search of the website and social feeds showed no posts warning about the alleged gang initiation stabbings.

A search of Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo revealed no credible reports of stabbings in Detroit linked to gang initiation, which would have been widely reported in the local media if the police had actually issued such a warning.

We found reports of two stabbings in local Detroit media in August 2026, neither of which mentioned suspected gang activity. The victim in one report was a male. The other report was about a teenage girl reportedly stabbing a man.

It’s possible the August 2026 headlines were being misrepresented in social media posts that became an instance of copypasta — a copied-and-pasted piece of text meant to spur further shares — as users began to spread it online.

Snopes recently debunked another Detroit-related claim investigating the false claim that Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed ran a “dog slaughterhouse” in the city.
