Australia’s engineering firm Worley has delivered front-end engineering designs (FEEDs) for two critical infrastructure packages related to a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas (LNG) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) development project in Indonesia’s Masela block, operated by Inpex Masela, a subsidiary of Japan’s Inpex.

Worley is assisting in the development of Inpex’s Abadi LNG project, a planned energy development under Indonesia’s Proyek Strategis Nasional (National Strategic Project) program. The project is expected to contribute to Indonesia’s energy security and support its net zero 2060 goals.

The engineering firm’s scope included front-end engineering design for two key offshore infrastructure packages in the Masela Block, covering approximately 150 kilometers of subsea infrastructure, gas export pipelines, and CCS pipelines.

Don MacLeod, President of Global Operations – APAC, commented: “We’re pleased to support Inpex to progress this significant development for Indonesia. Our work to successfully deliver the FEEDs demonstrates how Worley brings together deep local knowledge and specialist expertise from across our global business to help advance complex energy developments.”

Led by the company’s team in Indonesia, the FEEDs were delivered with specialists from the Subsea Centre of Excellence in Singapore and teams in Perth and Malaysia, developing an integrated infrastructure concept. This brings together subsea facilities, gas export pipelines, and CCS pipelines, supporting a coordinated approach to strengthen energy security while supporting lower-carbon outcomes.

The Abadi LNG project is expected to produce about 9.5 million tonnes of LNG annually and incorporate CCS to meet regional energy demand while contributing to the country’s emission-reduction goals. Inpex Masela is the operator of the Abadi LNG project with a 65% interest, while its partners are Pertamina (20%) and Petronas (15%), following Shell’s exit in 2023.

The production sharing contract (PSC) is valid until November 15, 2055. With a production capacity of around 150 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, the Abadi project’s condensate production is estimated to reach up to 35,000 barrels per day.
