UK-headquartered energy technology provider TechnipFMC has emphasized that strong execution momentum is keeping a giant deepwater oil project, operated by France’s energy giant TotalEnergies, in Block 58 off the coast of Suriname on track.

TechnipFMC, which secured an integrated engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (iEPCI) contract worth over $1 billion in 2024 for the GranMorgu development on Block 58 offshore Suriname, has confirmed that this project continues to make strong progress. The company has reported the delivery of “critical” subsea equipment that is supporting the next phase of execution.

According to the firm, the departure of the first drilling equipment and the installation of key floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) connection components demonstrate the impact of early collaboration, standardized engineering, and disciplined execution.

“Together with TotalEnergies, we are helping bring one of Suriname’s most significant offshore developments closer to production. Congratulations to every team across our global network whose expertise and commitment continue to move GranMorgu forward,” stated TechnipFMC.

This subsea equipment delivery comes shortly after SBM Offshore & Technip Energies Joint Venture (STS JV) and TotalEnergies EP Suriname, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, inked an agreement with Beyond the Sea to evaluate wind-assisted kite traction towing for Suriname’s GranMorgu FPSO project.

Once progress was achieved on the front-end engineering design (FEED) studies for Block 58’s two main oil discoveries, Sapakara South and Krabdagu, TotalEnergies, as the operator, sanctioned the GranMorgu development located 150 kilometers off the coast of Suriname. These fields are estimated to hold recoverable reserves of over 750 million barrels.

The operator initially estimated the project’s investment at around $10.5 billion, with first oil slated for 2028. However, the total investment value could reach up to $12.2 billion. With a daily capacity of 220,000 barrels of oil, the FPSO GranMorgu is designed to accommodate future tie-back opportunities to extend its production plateau.

TotalEnergies selected SBM Offshore and Technip Energies to handle the work related to GranMorgu’s FPSO, shortly after hand-picking Scotland’s ADC Energy for the rig selection process to unlock recoverable reserves in water depths between 100 and 1,000 meters, while Saipem won a $1.9 billion deal, enabling these players to work on Suriname’s first offshore oil development.
