Poverty and weariness in Nigel Farage’s Clacton | Nigel Farage

I live in the Clacton constituency, in one of the surrounding villages, some distance from the town, and I agree with Sarah Elizabeth Cox’s characterisation of the town (Farage has turned Clacton into a human zoo. Here’s the truth about what’s happening here, 12 August).

When I go to Clacton to take my kids to the beach or to the cinema, there is a sudden shift in the character of the area. The deprivation radiates in some streets. It is painful to see the residents so keenly in need of a decent MP to offer genuine support for a town with so many problems being exploited by Nigel Farage.

I have worked my way through a number of podcasts and news articles during this byelection and the 2024 general election campaigns. Those cherrypicked vox pops and even the broader and more balanced reporting speak of poverty and weariness in the Clacton population. Is it any wonder that a charismatic man offering a simple answer to complex problems is held on to so tightly?

So Nigel Farage couldn’t attend his election results because of security concerns – despite the £5m he was given for his security. Blimey, Clacton must be dangerous.

The Clacton byelection’s rash of joke candidates has been pretty much passed off by every media outlet as just another example of the “British sense of humour”, originating more or less from the frivolous establishment of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party in 1982. However, I am sufficiently old enough to recall that amid the laughter, anxious voices warned then that this could also fuel a debasement of the serious importance of politics and government in the UK. A case can be made that the far right’s rise in the UK has been partly fuelled by the way that politics has been reduced to a joke by such allegedly harmless shenanigans, which in fact implicitly or openly rely on reducing mainstream politics to the status of uniformly useless – “they are all the same”.
