    A total of 800 foreign tourists are missing across the affected Himalayan region, including South Korean, Indian and Australian nationals, with some of those countries sending their own rescue teams to aid in the search.

    ⁠At ⁠least ​288 Indian ​nationals are missing in Nepal and ​another ‌200 ⁠remain stranded ‌in China after ⁠a torrential flood swept through the ​Himalayan ‌border areas of the two countries, ‌India’s foreign ​ministry said.

    The 288 missing ​included tourists ​and ​Indians working in Nepal, ​it said.

    Chinese premier arrives at Tibet mudslide area

    Chinese Premier Li Qiang has arrived at the area on the China-Nepal border hit by a devastating mudslide, state media reported, to oversee search efforts for more than 500 people missing there.

    “With the support of General Secretary Xi Jinping … Premier Li Qiang, leading comrades from relevant departments, arrived at the disaster-stricken area of Gyirong Town, Gyirong County, Tibet to guide emergency rescue and relief work, and to visit rescue workers and affected people,” state news agency Xinhua reported.

    Five Japanese nationals missing, PM says

    Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she was “concerned” by media reports that five Japanese nationals were missing.

    “The Japanese Embassy in Nepal has been unable to reach these five compatriots despite attempts to contact them and has requested assistance in the search,” she said in a post on X. “I pray earnestly that their irreplaceable lives will be protected.”

    Climate change boosted risk of devastating flood, experts say

    Climate change ​is leading to conditions that can destabilise high-mountain rock and ice, strengthening prospects for disasters such as this week’s Himalayan flood, scientists say.

    “Climate change is generating conditions that ⁠can destabilise high-mountain rock and ice,” said Simon Cox, chief scientist at the Mountains to Sea programme at Earth Sciences New Zealand.

    That in turn makes collapses and cascading hazards of the kind seen this week more ‌frequent, he added.

    Beijing says ‘nearly 100’ Chinese missing in Nepal after flooding

    Nearly 100 Chinese nationals are missing in Nepal after massive flooding at the border region, Beijing’s foreign ministry said.

    “In the disaster-stricken area on the Nepalese side, the number of Chinese citizens missing is nearly 100,” ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters, adding that China’s embassy in Nepal was “seeking further verification” from Nepalese authorities.

    Chinese authorities said earlier that 558 people, including 260 foreigners, were missing on the Tibet-Nepal border.

    517 foreigners ‘out of contact’ after deadly floods, Nepal tourism board says

    Nepal’s Tourism Board said 517 foreigners remained out of contact, more than 24 hours after a deadly flood tore through the border region with Tibet.

    Among the missing are 178 from India, 65 from the United States, 53 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 35 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 25 from Canada. In addition, there are nine from Singapore, eight from Germany and eight from Russia.

    🎥 Glacial collapse behind catastrophic Nepal-Tibet landslides

    Flash ⁠floods that struck ​the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China’s Tibet on Wednesday have killed at least 165 people.

    While initial reports suggested the collapse was possibly triggered by an earthquake, the US Geological Survey ‌said the reported tremor was in fact seismic energy generated by the collapse of glacial ⁠rock and ice, followed by debris flow.

    Relief efforts are under way with India sending HADR material, medecine and food packages to Nepal.

    A second flight has just taken off from India carrying 37.5 tonnes of HADR material, medicines & food packets headed for Nepal, India’s external affairs minister posted on X.

    Scores of Hindu pilgrims missing in Tibet-Nepal floods

    Scores of pilgrims from across the world are among the hundreds missing after deadly floods swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, popular Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru said.

    The Hindu guru, whose real name is Jagdish Vasudev, posted an emotional video message from Tibet on his social media accounts, with several million followers.

    Some 77 pilgrims were at the Nepal-China border immigration office when the flood hit on Wednesday, he said.
