There are obvious similarities between Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, who won a close victory on Wednesday in the Democratic Senate primary in the battleground state of Michigan.
Both are young, progressive politicians who are also Muslim. They focused their campaigns on lifting the working class. Super PACs marshaled tens of millions of dollars to oppose their candidacies. And both have overcome that resistance as they have helped fuel the Democratic Party’s ascendant left wing.
But is it fair to call Dr. El-Sayed Michigan’s “mini-Mamdani,” as some people have begun to do? According to Mr. Mamdani, the answer is no.
“He can lift a lot more than I can,” the mayor quipped at a news conference at City Hall on Wednesday, referencing Dr. El-Sayed’s love of weight lifting. “I don’t think in any way this man is a mini-Mamdani.”
Mr. Mamdani characterized Dr. El-Sayed as the type of politician who could bring needed change to the Democratic Party. Dr. El-Sayed has spent years focusing on public health and health care, the mayor said.
“I am proud to be part of a movement of politicians and candidates who are looking to put working-class Americans back at the heart of our politics, and that’s our focus here in New York City,” Mr. Mamdani said. “And just from what we’re seeing in Michigan, it looks like that’s what Michiganders want to be their focus come November.”
Not everyone agrees with Mr. Mamdani. Speaker Mike Johnson, in response to the victories by Dr. El-Sayed and other left-wing Democrats, posted on social media on Wednesday morning that Democrats were expressing “disdain for America” and embracing “the failed, dangerous, deadly path of communism.”
The mayor responded by first mocking the length of Mr. Johnson’s multi-paragraph post after a journalist read it to him. “That’s a lot of characters,” the mayor said. “He must have the pro account.”
But what the critique really showed, the mayor added, was “how deeply out of touch the Republican Party is with the concerns of working-class Americans.”
