Judge pauses order sending Trump financial data to BBC

Altman’s four-page order, dated Wednesday and made public Thursday, said he found merit in Trump’s contention that his bid to drop his claims of damage to his brand and businesses — focusing instead on damage to his reputation — might undercut the BBC’s need for the financial data.

“This is a compelling argument,” wrote Altman, a Miami-based Trump appointee.

Lawyers for the BBC argued that information on the value of Trump’s businesses will continue to be relevant to the case regardless, since Trump’s reputation is closely tied to his business acumen.

The BBC’s attorneys have also noted that Trump’s proposed new complaint, which is not yet public, still seeks $10 billion in damages, a sum they have suggested would be impossible to justify based solely on reputational injury.

Trump’s suit, filed last December, stems from a brief sequence in a 2024 BBC documentary, “Trump: A Second Chance.” Trump claims the program defamed him by splicing together clips of his Jan. 6, 2021 speech in a manner that made him appear to endorse his supporters’ engaging in violence at the Capitol, as many did that day.

The BBC has apologized for the editing, but contends any confusion was unintentional and not legally actionable. The network has asked Altman to dismiss the suit on various grounds, including that the federal court in south Florida lacks jurisdiction over the London-based broadcaster.

If Altman allows Trump to recast his complaint, the suit could be delayed for weeks or months as the BBC would get another opportunity to urge dismissal of the reframed suit and Trump’s lawyers would be permitted to respond.
