In August 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump said, “We were a dumb, stupid country, led by a very, very stupid person a year ago.”
On Aug. 21, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at a rally for U.S. Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina, where he said, “We were a dumb, stupid country led by a very, very stupid person.”
He did not say “a year ago.” Trump was referring to two years ago, when former U.S. President Joe Biden was in office.
In August 2026, after U.S. President Donald Trump gave a speech at a rally, social media posts claimed he said, “We were a dumb, stupid country, led by a very, very stupid person a year ago.”
A meme that circulated on X and Facebook mocked Trump over the alleged remark since he began his second presidential term in January 2025.

Trump did call the U.S. a “dumb, stupid country” led by a “stupid person,” but he did not say “a year ago.” Before making the comment, Trump clearly stated that he was talking about America “two years ago,” when former U.S. President Joe Biden was in office. As such, we rate this claim a mixture of true and false information.
Trump made the statement during a speech on Aug. 21, 2026, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was supporting the candidacy of Republican U.S. Sen. Darline Graham, sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. We have reproduced that section of Trump’s speech below (emphasis ours):
And we have people laughing at America as they were just two years ago. We’re not going to let that happen. We’re not going to let people laugh at us anymore. We’re the smart country now, not the dumb country. We were a dumb, stupid country led by a very, very stupid person who wasn’t leading. I mean, they had some radical left lunatics leading. He was not leading. And state after state, the Democrat party is now running the most extreme, unhinged anti-American candidates in the history of our country.
As seen in the above section, Trump said people were “laughing” at the U.S. “two years ago” rather than “a year ago,” as posts claimed.
Trump made the comments at the 29-minute mark:
Darline Graham was appointed to complete the remainder of her brother’s term after his death in July 2026. South Carolinians will vote for the Republican candidate for the senate seat in late August 2026, with the general election taking place in November.
