In early August 2026, social media users shared an alleged quote attributed to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in which she purportedly said the Iran war “would be over by now” if U.S. President Donald Trump “had better intelligence.”
For instance, one Facebook post read, “Karoline Leavitt: ‘The conflict in Iran would be over by now if President Trump had better intelligence.'”
The purported quote spread on social media platforms including X, Instagram and Facebook.
In short, there was no evidence Leavitt made the remark. The quote originated from a social media post shared by an account with a history of fabricating statements attributed to public figures. It appeared in neither official White House materials nor credible news reports.
In response to our request for a comment, the White House responded: “This is fake.”
Origin of the fabricated quote
Searches for the quote showed it circulating on social media, but not through any official White House channels or Leavitt’s official X account. We also found no credible news reports attributing the remark to her.

The earliest instance we found was an Aug. 2, 2026, X post (archived) by the account Captain Obvious (@TheFungi669). But the post spread the alleged quote without providing any evidence that Leavitt said it.

In April 2026, the same account shared a similar fabricated quote attributed to Leavitt, reading, “It’s hard for President Trump to make key decisions on Iran when he doesn’t have enough intelligence.”
The @TheFungi669 account (archived) has previously acknowledged publishing parody and used the display name “Captain Parody” in 2023. At the time of this writing, its display name was “Captain Obvious,” and its bio read, “As my high IQ followers know, I have never faked a sarcasm.”
We have investigated fabricated statements originating with the account several times, including purported quotes attributed to Leavitt, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance and Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.
