Houston-headquartered energy giant Chevron has shut down production at its asset in the U.S. Gulf and taken other storm-related measures to get ready for the arrival of Tropical Storm Bertha, which continues to gain momentum.

Chevron has shut-in production at its Petronius facility, with all associated personnel moved onshore in preparation for Tropical Storm Bertha. Situated in approximately 1,754 feet (535 meters) of water, this platform is located in Viosca Knoll block VK786, roughly 100 miles (161 kilometers) east-southeast of New Orleans.

The production from the firm’s other operated Gulf of America (U.S. Gulf of Mexico) assets remains at normal levels. The company has transported nonessential personnel from its Tubular Bells and Blind Faith platforms. The U.S. giant is following its storm preparedness procedures at its onshore facilities and paying close attention to the forecast.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), Bertha, which is moving toward the northwest near 5 mph (7 km/h), will move near or along the northern Gulf Coast during the next several days.

While explaining that it will continue to closely monitor the storm, Chevron emphasized: “We remain focused on the safety of our workforce, the integrity of our facilities and the protection of the environment.”

The U.S. player is actively working on expanding its global oil and gas portfolio, as illustrated by its recent deal to acquire a majority stake and operatorship in a block offshore Greece.
