Canada: Allseas to install critical subsea section of remote natural gas pipeline

Allseas has secured a contract with Western LNG to install the critical subsea section of the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline in Canada.

Located in the remote waters of north-western British Columbia, near the Alaska border, the subsea pipeline forms the final link in the 700-kilometer system transporting Canadian natural gas to the planned Ksi Lisims LNG export facility on the Pacific coast..

Allseas’ scope comprises approximately 50 kilometers of 36- and 48-inch concrete-weight-coated pipeline, connecting the onshore transmission system to the planned floating LNG facility on Pearse Island.

Offshore installation activities are scheduled for 2029 and will be performed by pipelay vessels Solitaire and Sandpiper in water depths ranging from the shoreline to approximately 450 meters.

The work includes multiple shore crossings, shore pull-ins, above-water tie-ins, trenching activities, route stabilization, and pre- and post-lay span rectification. Combined with the project’s remote location, the complex nearshore works make for a technically demanding installation campaign, Allseas said.

Ksi Lisims LNG is a proposed 12 mtpa floating export facility being developed by the Nisga’a Nation, Rockies LNG, and Western LNG. The project will be situated on Nisga’a Nation-owned land, a strategically located site with direct and efficient routes to growing Asian markets.

The project and its feed pipeline PRGT have received key environmental approvals and have been identified as projects of national interest by the Canadian government. Pending a final investment decision (FID) by the project co-developers, construction could begin by early 2027.
