UK-headquartered energy giant BP has put into production an expansion project of a field in the U.S. Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico) that was discovered in 1998.

BP reported today, July 30, the start-up of the Atlantis Major Facility Expansion project, which adds two new subsea water injection wells to the Atlantis field to help increase the pressure of targeted reservoirs, unlocking additional barrels and extending the asset’s producing life.

According to the company, the project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget and adds approximately 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) of gross peak annualized average production, with around 5,000 boe/d net to BP.

BP is Atlantis’ operator with a 56% working interest, and the co-owner is Woodside Energy with the remaining 44% working interest. The field is located about 150 miles south of New Orleans.

“Atlantis has been one of the anchors of our Gulf business for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves there is still more value to be generated,” said Andy Krieger, BP’s Senior Vice President for the Gulf of America and Canada. “We’re extending the life of a great asset while supporting jobs and investment in the region — all while making the most of infrastructure that’s already in place.”

BP recently sanctioned two new production platforms, Kaskida and Tiber, which together are expected to add 160,000 barrels per day of new oil production capacity in the U.S. offshore region by the end of 2030.

At the end of 2025, the UK-headquartered firm delivered first oil two months ahead of plan from the two-well Atlantis Drill Center 1 expansion project in the Gulf of America, representing its seventh major project start-up.

These projects are part of BP’s plan to deliver ten major project start-ups globally by 2027.
