Did Alysa Liu share Mamdani’s call for Netanyahu’s arrest?

In July 2026, a screenshot circulated online indicating that Olympic figure skater Alysa Liu reposted a video on her Instagram story of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani calling on the federal government to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu is set to arrive in New York in September 2026 for the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. Because the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest in November 2024, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity, Mamdani released a video on platforms including Instagram on July 21 calling on the federal government to arrest the Israeli prime minister.

The claim that Liu reposted the video spread across multiple platforms beginning on July 22, including Instagram, Facebook, Reddit and X (archived), where one post received more than 2.6 million views.

We were unable to determine whether Liu posted the video on her Instagram story, as story posts last only 24 hours. Story archives are viewable only by the owner of the account. Because of this, we have left this claim unrated.

We did, however, confirm that her official Instagram account, @alysaxliu, “liked” the post by Mamdani.

We reached out to Liu’s public relations representative as well as her Instagram account seeking confirmation and further comment and did not immediately hear back. We will update this story if we do.

Social media accounts have documented other posts Liu allegedly published in the past, including one that read, “There is more spilled blood than drinkable water in Gaza” and another that appeared to be taken at a protest.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in March 2026, Liu spoke about her politics more broadly. “Me and my family would go to protests,” she said. “Sometimes we’ll call our policy makers, we’d write letters … but yeah mostly protests, donations too, little stuff here and there.”

Although it’s unclear whether Liu posted the video of Mamdani speaking on her Instagram story, the fact that she “liked” the post indicates she supported the mayor’s message.

Mamdani campaigned on a promise to arrest Netanyahu, in accordance with the ICC warrant, if he stepped foot in New York City. He announced in the video that his administration “reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the International Criminal Court’s arrest if Benjamin Netanyahu came here,” and found they did not. He called on the federal government to “join the ICC and execute this warrant.”

Because the U.S. is not a member of the ICC, it is not obligated to uphold arrest warrants made by the court. In February 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the ICC, claiming it engaged in “illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel.”

On July 20, 2026, Trump wrote on his social media website Truth Social: “Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America.”
