Babcock LGE, a Rosyth-based marine engineering business within Babcock International, has won a new assignment with South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) that covers four 88,000-cubic-meter (cbm) very large gas carriers (VLGCs), bolstering its position in the global liquefied gas handling market.
Babcock LGE has secured a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for four 88,000 cbm VLGCs being built in South Korea for shipowner Oceonix, representing another project win in the Asian country, which the Scottish player believes reinforces the value of its engineering capability, system integration expertise, and experience across large-scale gas carrier applications.
Andrew Fitzgerald, Commercial Director for Babcock LGE, commented: “Securing this latest contract with Samsung Heavy Industries reflects the strength of our relationship, the confidence Samsung continues to place in our technology and team, and our shared commitment to delivering successful projects. We look forward to building on this partnership and supporting future growth together.”
The duo will work closely throughout the engineering and delivery program in support of the construction of all four vessels. Babcock LGE intends to build a strong, through-life relationship with Oceonix beyond delivery in 2029, enabling the vessel’s gas systems to perform optimally in operation.
“This award strengthens Babcock LGE’s position in the global VLGC market and continues its long-standing involvement in the design and delivery of liquefied gas handling solutions for major shipyards and shipowners,” according to the European engineering company.
Samsung Heavy Industries is bringing multiple vessels and energy infrastructure assets to life, including a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit that will work in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, on Canada’s West Coast.
