A video authentically shows U.S. President Donald Trump waking himself up with a fart during a maternal healthcare announcement in the Oval Office on May 11, 2026.
In August 2026, people shared a video allegedly showing U.S. President Donald Trump waking himself up with a fart while seated during an Oval Office announcement.
For example, on Aug. 8, an X user posted (archived) the clip overlaid with text reading, “Trump wakes himself up after audible fart during White House briefing.”
Other users shared the same video on Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), TikTok (archived), X (archived) and YouTube (archived). A number of Snopes readers also searched for information about the rumor.
In sum, Snopes’ investigation found that someone edited a sound effect into the video. A YouTube video titled “Top 10 fart meme sound effects” features the exact same fart sound effect at the 0:16 mark. As such, we rated the claim as fake.
During the clip, Trump’s eyes appear partially or fully closed for several seconds. He does not slowly drop his head or display other sleepy signs we previously examined in reported instances of him appearing to begin dozing off.
The clip originated from a longer video with Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, speaking and referring to Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., during a White House announcement about maternal healthcare on May 11, 2026. The same moment from the altered fart video users shared begins at the 20:24 mark:
We emailed the White House to ask if the administration wished to respond to the users editing and sharing videos with edited-in fart noises and will update this article if we receive a response.
Researching the rumor
The Trump video with the added fart sound effect featured Oz’s voice, recognizable from his former daytime TV show, “The Dr. Oz Show.” Oz did not visibly appear in the cropped clip users shared on social media. In the video, Oz mentions the name Katie — a reference to Britt — and the word “fertility.”
To find the source of the clip, we performed a single Google search for the four terms “Katie,” “Dr. Mehmet Oz,” “Oval Office” and “fertility.” The results led to the May 11 maternal healthcare announcement at the White House, including the aforementioned YouTube video of the full event.
To find the fart sound effect that was added, we initially surmised the person who edited in the noise likely sourced the audio from a popular video appearing high in Google search results. A Google search for “fart sound effect” (without quotation marks) first displayed results for three videos. We located the match at the No. 6 slot in the earlier-mentioned “top 10” video.
A reverse image search indicated TikTok user @brilliant.gomez possibly shared the first post (archived) of the edited video on Aug. 7. We messaged that user to ask whether they created the clip and will update this story if we receive further details.
James Kennedy, an Australian creator and podcaster, has regularly shared videos of Trump and members of his administration with added fart sound effects, including most recently on Aug. 10.
Searches of Kennedy’s comedic content on his Facebook, Instagram, Threads and TikTok accounts did not yet locate the same clip from the May 11 Oval Office announcement, possibly suggesting another user edited the video. We contacted Kennedy to ask whether he created the clip and will update this article if we receive further details.
