Cypher wind-down: Aug. 7 final spending day

The Cypher wind-down, after payments company Nium acquired the crypto card and self-custody wallet provider, will end purchases on all active Cypher Cards at 00:00 UTC on Aug. 8. That makes Aug. 7 the final spending day, while users have until Sept. 6 to withdraw balances, claim rewards and preserve wallet access before Cypher’s app, dApp, and business platform go offline.

Cypher’s broader termination notice says the card will be deactivated on Sept. 6, conflicting with its operational timeline. That timeline and an Osmosis Pay reminder both set Aug. 7 as the last spending day, so cardholders should treat the earlier date as the operative cutoff.

The wind-down covers existing physical and virtual Cypher Cards as well as business cards. Osmosis has told Osmosis Pay cardholders to follow the same two dates, placing that product’s card users within the Cypher wind-down. Neither company has published regional exceptions, and the Osmosis notice applies to its cardholders rather than every Osmosis user.

Nium announced the acquisition on July 8, saying Cypher’s founder and engineering team had joined the payments company. Cypher frames the closure as an acquisition-led wind-down and says customer funds are safe and available for fee-free withdrawal.

Personal users can request a card-balance withdrawal in the Cypher app by opening Cards, selecting Options, and choosing Withdraw Card Balance. Cypher says withdrawals use USDC settlement on Base, incur no Cypher fee and may take 24 to 48 hours to reach a wallet. Business users can withdraw remaining balances through the business platform before it closes.

Stablecoin cards are turning crypto balances into everyday spending power, exposing that the easiest path to mainstream adoption may be through Visa, the same payments giant crypto was supposed to disrupt.

Users must also claim CYPR rewards, unlocked CYPR, and protocol incentives, including USDC and other assets, before Sept. 6. Reward claims will not remain available after the wind-down. Claimed CYPR can remain on-chain, but Cypher says the protocol, governance, rewards program and support behind the token will end.

Self-custody wallet assets are separate from the card balance and remain under the user’s control. Cypher advises users to back up or export recovery credentials and verify access through a compatible alternative wallet before its app disappears.

Cypher says stablecoins remain withdrawable through Sept. 6 and that eligible balances left behind may move to a linked self-custody wallet where possible. Its guidance provides no universal process for every unclaimed balance type, and Cypher has not specified the Sept. 6 cutoff’s exact time or timezone. Completing the offboarding steps before that date avoids relying on a partial fallback.
