Was Mitch McConnell’s dead body transported to Kentucky coroner? Here’s the truth

    Claim:

The dead body of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY, was transported to a Kentucky coroner on Aug. 3, 2026.

    Rating:

In early August 2026, a video circulated online in which a man claimed that Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY, had died and his body had been transported to a Kentucky coroner. The video emerged following weeks of speculation about McConnell’s health after it was revealed he had been hospitalized in early July.

According to the individual in the video (archived), who has more than 1.3 million followers on their @epistemiccrisis Instagram account, McConnell’s body had been delivered to Kentucky Central State Hospital in Louisville.

One of the video creator’s viewers sent him messages claiming that a body covered with a flag was carried to the coroner’s office in the hospital. A procession also allegedly took place. The same messages claimed the Louisville Metro Police would not comment on the procession. The footage also featured a Facebook post, with comments discussing blocked traffic in the area.

Facebook posts from late July 2026 also spread with joke claims that McConnell was going to die on Aug. 3, 2026, the same day the @epistemiccrisis account posted the original video (which has since been deleted).

In short, the claim is false. There has been no official confirmation that McConnell has died. There is also no evidence his alleged dead body was transported to the coroner’s office in Kentucky, nor is there any public statement from Louisville Police commenting on a procession for the senator’s passing. The creator of the video making the claim also later posted a retraction.

Snopes has contacted McConnell’s team to learn the latest update on his health.

The video’s creator relied on text messages from an unnamed individual, making it difficult to determine the source of the rumor. The Louisville Metro Police Department also made no statement about the procession or McConnell on its Facebook page, or any of its social media pages.

It was not possible to find any media coverage of such a procession in Louisville or of McConnell’s passing. Had the latter been true, reputable outlets like the Associated Press or Reuters would have covered news of McConnell’s death.

Furthermore, Epistemic Crisis, the account that posted the video on Instagram, later deleted it and issued a retraction (archived). Per his follow-up video, the information he received was “inaccurate.” He claimed the procession that blocked the traffic was due to the death of a police officer. We have reached out to the Louisville Metro PD to verify whether this is true. We will update this article if we learn more.

McConnell’s team posted the most recent update regarding his health on July 27 (archived), with a photo seemingly showing the senator in a hospital bed alongside his wife, Elaine Chao. According to the Office of the Attending Physician:

Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June. OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care. Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.

According to his statement, McConnell is being treated in Washington D.C.

Democrats, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, criticized McConnell’s absence from the public eye.

In his statement, McConnell noted that he would be missing the Aug. 1 Fancy Farm picnic, a major political event in the state.

Snopes has previously covered numerous rumors about McConnell’s health concerns.
