Did Trump say grass ‘is like human beings’?

    Claim:

U.S. President Donald Trump said, “You know, grass is like human beings. Grass has a life also.”

    Rating:

    Context

In August 2025, Trump made one of his first — if not the first — public remarks of this kind, specifically using the word “lifetime.” He said, “You know, grass has a lifetime like people have a lifetime. And a lifetime of this grass has long been gone when you look at the parks where the grass is old, tired, exhausted.”

In late July 2026, people shared a rumor alleging U.S. President Donald Trump said on more than one occasion, “You know, grass is like human beings. Grass has a life also.”

On July 29, for instance, an Instagram page shared a meme (archived) pitting a thought about Americans needing affordable, safe-to-eat groceries against Trump riffing on the idea that grass is a living plant. According to the meme, Trump said: “We’re changing all the grass in the parks. That’s going to be changed very shortly. The parks are- because- grass is very, you know- grass is like human beings. Grass has a life also.”

The meme’s sarcastic punchline was “Oh, phew. At least the grass will live.”

Users shared a video of Trump’s remark on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived), Threads (archived) and X (archived). The relevant moment begins at the 26:17 mark in the official White House YouTube video.

Snopes readers searched to find out whether Trump truly made the comment, as well as whether a video of him saying it was authentic and not digitally edited or AI-generated.

Reached for comment on Aug. 3, a White House spokesperson referred us to a similar remark Trump made in the Oval Office just moments earlier. In that instance, Trump said, “Grass is like humans. It has a life.” That quote appears around the 42:16 mark in the official White House YouTube video.

In sum, our research confirmed those words were correctly attributed to Trump. The video clip was genuine.

‘Grass has a lifetime like people have a lifetime’

Trump uttered numerous versions of the same thought in 2025 and 2026, usually in connection with beautifying of Washington, D.C., parks.

On Aug. 13, 2025, in what may have been the earliest variant, Trump used the word “lifetime” instead of “life.” He said, “You know, grass has a lifetime like people have a lifetime. And a lifetime of this grass has long been gone when you look at the parks where the grass is old, tired, exhausted.”

About a week later, on Aug. 21, Trump spoke (8:44) in front of a U.S. Park Police building, saying he knows more about grass than anyone else (emphasis ours):

I’m very good at grass because I have a lot of golf courses all over the place. I know more about grass than any human being, I think, anywhere in the world. And we’re going to be regrassing all of your parks, all brand-new sprinkler systems, the best that you can buy, just like Augusta. No di-, it’ll look like Augusta. It’ll look like, more importantly, Trump National Golf Club. That’s even better. But, we’re going to look, we’re going to have all brand- new, beautiful grass.

You know, like everything else, grass has a life. Do you know that? Grass has a life. You know, we have a life and grass has a life, and the grass here died about 40 years ago.

Trump made similar remarks on subsequent dates, including saying on Sept. 5, 2025, that grass has “like four lives.”

For further reading, we previously reported about Trump repeatedly alleging grocery stores keep apples in refrigerators, as well as whether actor Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump character truly said, “Life is like a box of chocolates.”
