Floating wind turbine that will power UK gas platform ready for tow to offshore site

The Culzean floating wind turbine, which will supply electricity to the Culzean gas platform in the North Sea, off the coast of Scotland, will soon be towed to its offshore location as the integration of the wind turbine with the floating foundation has been completed.

Archer, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, said earlier this month that the tower, nacelle and blades of a Vestas wind turbine were installed on the floating foundation designed and developed by Ocergy.

The company said it had completed the integration work together with project partners, including Global Maritime, Navitas Renewables, Wergeland Group, Sarens and Archer Vertikal.

The floating wind pilot was one of the 13 Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) offshore wind projects awarded seabed rights by Crown Estate Scotland in 2023, with TotalEnergies, the operator of the Culzean gas field, being the company that secured the rights.

TotalEnergies launched the project in August 2024, with fabrication work starting in November that year.

Currently, the Culzean Floating Wind project is being led by NEO NEXT+ Energy, an independent UK oil and gas producer formed on March 30, 2026, through the merger of NEO Energy, Repsol UK, and TotalEnergies’ UK upstream business.

The floating wind pilot comprises a single 3 MW floating wind turbine that will be installed around 2 kilometers west of the Culzean gas platform, approximately 220 kilometers off Scotland’s east coast.

Once commissioned, the turbine is expected to provide about 20% of the platform’s electricity demand, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by supplementing power currently generated by gas turbines.

Besides supplying renewable power to the gas platform, the Culzean Floating Wind pilot is planned to serve as a demonstration platform for floating wind technology, generating operational data and experience to support future commercial projects. The semi-submersible foundation has been designed for modular fabrication and is optimized for rapid assembly, according to Ocergy, for which the project marks the first commercial deployment of its OCG-Wind floating foundation technology.
