Robot vacuum mops can climb well over $1,000, as can automatic pool cleaners, lawn mowers, and other self-cleaning systems. AI-powered video doorbells and security cameras often cost hundreds, smart thermostats can run similarly, and plenty of other common home tech has a hefty price tag to match — before you even pay for any required subscriptions or plans.

That means the most innovative smart home tech is often an expensive investment for many people. But we’ve tested plenty of gadgets that are under $100 and can still give your home a big upgrade. Here are the simple smart home gadgets we love for their elevated function and wallet-friendly prices.

Smart blinds are awesome, but they can be pretty pricey. Thankfully, Switchbot makes an automatic curtain opener than can push open exisitng curtains or sheers without any major changes or installation on your windows. It can also be set up to charge via Switchbot’s solar chargers, so it’s low maintenance and low budget.
If there’s one smart gadget you really can’t go wrong with, it’s these slim smart plugs from Kasa, which are available in value packs of 2 or 4. Smart plugs can help automate so many different items in your home, from kitchen appliances to lights and lamps. Smart home reviewer Maria Diaz and I both love these for the holiday season, too, as they’re perfect for controlling your tree or other decor from your phone.

You can automate more than just lights. Aqara’s vibration sensors can be attached to windows, art, drawers, and physical objects like jewelry trays and more. They’ll let you know when movement and motion are detected via the app. Smart home reviewer Maria Diaz says these are also great for sensing when your washer and dryer are done cycling, especially if you have an older setup that doesn’t need replacing but lacks newer smart features.
There are dozens of smart bulb options out there from several brands, but editor Allison Murray prefers these GE Cync smart light bulbs because they require no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. They simply can change color thanks to an included remote, which is the perfect way to add no-fuss ambiance to your home and easily upgrade your lighting. Plenty of gadgets on the market are designed to notify you when things may be awry in your home, like this leak detector from Govee. This device will send emails and texts to your chosen accounts when water is detected, and are great for kitchens, basements, bathrooms, and more.
The Ting Smart Sensor plugs into an outlet and prevents electrical fires with helpful usage reports. It doesn’t require any extra smart home systems, but you will need to download the Ting app to complete setup.
