Cisco warned of two high-severity vulnerabilities affecting the Secure Endpoint Connector that allow threat actors to crash the ClamAV scanning process in denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The security flaws (tracked as CVE-2026-20337 and CVE-2026-20338) were found in the ZIP archive parser of ClamAV (Clam AntiVirus), the open-source and cross-platform engine used to scan files for malware. As Cisco explained in a Friday advisory, the two vulnerabilities are due to improper boundary checks and memory handling, respectively, and can be exploited by unauthenticated, remote attackers. The company’s Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) added that proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit code is already publicly…

Dogs are often called ‘man’s best friend’, and their long history with people gives that phrase real weight. Archaeologists have discovered dogs buried beside humans in graves as old as 14,000 years. Dogs also appear in ancient artwork from every continent and hold places in the mythology, religion and folklore of cultures around the world. Across recorded history, they have hunted beside us, guarded homes, carried loads, managed livestock and provided companionship. More dogs live alongside people today than ever before. Over thousands of years, humans have also developed hundreds of distinct types, ranging from tiny chihuahuas small enough to…

Founder’s Briefs: An occasional series where Mongabay founder Rhett Ayers Butler shares analysis, perspectives and story summaries. For more than three decades, Willie Tucker has helped care for Sierra Leone’s western chimpanzees and watched the pressures on them change, reports contributor Patricia Sia Ngevao for Mongabay. It now houses more than 120 critically endangered western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus), indicating that trafficking remains a serious problem.…

Calls for changes to breast cancer guidelines for GPs are welcome (Report, 4 August). The existing guidelines are irrational. If your grandmother and mother have both had breast cancer, you are still not added to the intensified screening list unless an aunt or great-aunt or sister has also had breast cancer. Hence the system discriminates against families – like mine – with only one woman in a generation.Helen HillsYork It seems that Anna Tims’s correspondent committed the wrong environmental crime (I was fined £500 after putting a coffee cup in a rubbish bag next to a full bin, 3 August).…

US President Donald Trump secretly flew out of last month’s NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, on an alternate military aircraft while the White House made it appear that the Republican president was flying on Air Force One, according to a report published by The Washington Post on Monday. The Post said the operation was prompted by an Iranian assassination threat against Trump. The ruse was carried out as journalists and some White House staff members were led to believe they were on the same plane as the president as he began his journey back to Washington from the annual gathering…

The Democrats’ congressional campaign arm has added Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker running for Congress in Ohio, to a list of candidates who party leaders believe can flip their districts. It is the latest sign of political fallout from the abuse allegations against his Republican opponent, Representative Max Miller.Mr. Poindexter’s addition to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s highly competitive “Red to Blue” program is likely to attract a significant influx of campaign cash from donors. He is running for Ohio’s Seventh Congressional District, which was considered solidly Republican until Mr. Miller was accused of physically abusing family members, including holding…

Robot mowers are battery-powered, autonomous lawn mowers, making them a sustainable alternative to traditional gas-powered models. Much like robot vacuums, robot lawn mowers autonomously navigate around the ground, cutting grass as they go. They use sensors to navigate and stay within boundaries while mowing, as well as a companion control app. Unlike newer vacuums, robot lawn mowers can use a physical boundary, such as a buried wire along the perimeter, as with the Husqvarna 430X. The bots can also use a combination of GPS and LiDAR navigation, aided by a satellite antenna, to mow autonomously within a specified area, like the Mammotion…

Three separate research efforts last week demonstrated ways to defeat passkey protections without breaking the cryptography they rest on. Passkeys are designed to replace reusable passwords and resist phishing. The attacks instead reused signed authentication material that Windows had exposed, abused a cloud-synced passkey system from malware already on the victim’s machine, and used a Windows Hello for Business key from a compromised user session without a fresh PIN or biometric check. None cracked the math. The impact is not the same in all three cases. SpecterOps showed a Windows and Microsoft Entra ID chain that could impersonate privileged users…
