Nato needs “more UK and more Europe” to deal with the most dangerous security environment faced by the west in a generation, the secretary general of the 32-country military alliance said this afternoon on a visit to the UK.Mark Rutte praised Britain for promising to increase defence spending in line with US demands after a meeting with prime minister Andy Burnham – but argued that the military and financial effort must continue into the future.“It is essential that your armed forces continue to provide the hard power Nato needs,” Rutte said in a speech to a specialist audience at Ditchley…
European legislation that threatens to lock British business out of EU industry could derail a planned reset summit between the bloc and the UK, government sources have said. The “Made in Europe” legislation – formally known as the Industrial Accelerator Act – is designed to curb China’s increasing presence in European industry, but was not on the reset plan agreed by the former prime minister, Keir Starmer, and the European Commission chief, Ursula von der Leyen, in London in May 2025.A follow-up summit was due to be held in July this year, but was cancelled after Starmer’s resignation. The government is…
Amazon Prime Day events are some of the most confusing shopping occasions in existence: It’s not even a single “day” anymore. Amazon promises “millions of deals”—but the displayed discounts are often misleading, and while it’s advertised as a members-only event, some deals are available to people who don’t subscribe to Prime. Add in the frenzy of limited-time Lightning Deals and you’ve got a perfect recipe for spending too much money on stuff you don’t even really want.Fear not! I’ve been covering deals for over a decade and am here to help. WIRED’s Reviews team is familiar with common shopping pitfalls,…
A banking malware operation active since mid-2025 has been using a toolkit named KREMLIN to install malicious Chrome and Edge extensions that steal credentials, session tokens, and sensitive data. Researchers at Elastic Security Labs found that the malicious extensions bypass Chromium’s integrity mechanisms and load in browsers as if they had been approved by the user. The infection chain starts after the target user opens a JavaScript file disguised as a bank receipt, invoice, payment record, or business document. After passing anti-sandbox checks, the file triggers a fake error while simultaneously downloading Node.js, establishing persistence through a scheduled task, and retrieving…
Bitcoin (BTC) traders aren’t exactly panicking about Wednesday’s expected Federal Reserve rate hike, but they aren’t taking many chances either.Markets are pricing a 92.5% chance the Fed raises rates for the first time in three years after strong employment data and stubborn inflation. Bitcoin has spent the past 24 days stuck between roughly $76,000 and $80,000, with volatility falling to a one-month low.For some traders, the quarter-point hike is already old news.“The bond market has done its job and fully priced in tomorrow’s hike,” said Chris Sullivan of Hyperion Decimus. In his view, the bigger shock could come if the…
Scientists have made mice with a remarkable amount of room for human brain tissue to grow. By genetically engineering animals lacking part of their brain, researchers created a living model in which pea-sized clumps of human neurons could expand, mature and wire into a developing nervous system, ultimately coming to dominate the mouse cortex, the brain’s outer layer. The model offers a new way to study human neural circuits and brain disease, researchers report September 16 in Nature. When Boris Nadezhdin began campaigning for Russia’s parliamentary elections as an independent candidate over the summer, more than four years on from the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the politician was driven by a belief that Russians wanted peace. His experiment proved short-lived: Within weeks, authorities piled on such legal pressure that by late July, he felt compelled to leave the country or face likely imprisonment. Nadezhdin, 63, is not a natural firebrand, and his campaign wasn’t radical. If he erred, he thinks it was by not fading into irrelevance after a failed bid for president two years ago. “I must…
