On television, Bill Oddie often seemed to forget the camera. A call came from a hedge, and his attention shifted toward it. He listened, peered through his binoculars, and said what he thought he had heard. Viewers shared the uncertainty, the waiting, and the excitement when the bird finally appeared. He showed that birdwatching could begin almost anywhere. The equipment was simple, and the wildlife was often close to home. A garden, park, reservoir, or patch of scrub provided enough to get started. Oddie, who died on July 25th, aged 85, had already been famous for many years.…

Tuesday, American Oversight released a previously undisclosed agreement showing that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) formalized a data-sharing partnership amid the Trump administration’s controversial expansion of immigration enforcement into domestic air travel. The lawsuit sought documents explaining the…

Images of the Bordeaux region, home to a large population and many popular vacation spots, engulfed by flames have deepened an already grim mood in the political class and among ordinary citizens alike. Macron made an impromptu visit to the area on Monday to meet with local firefighters and appealed for national unity as his government sought to contain criticism of its response.  Le Pen herself struck a more restrained tone. The Senate confirmed Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, on Tuesday to oversee the nation’s intelligence agencies, installing a longtime ally of the president into a top national security post that has waned in significance during the second Trump administration. The vote, 51 to 47, was along party lines. Biden Jr. had won the 2020 presidential election.Though Democrats opposed Mr. Clayton, some have privately expressed relief that…
