Swati KhandelwalSep 22, 2026Vulnerability / Virtualization A new flaw in the Linux kernel’s KVM virtualization code for ARM64 processors can leave a freed piece of host memory exposed to a guest virtual machine on hosts with nested virtualization enabled. The bug, tracked as CVE-2026-89775, allows a guest to read and write host kernel memory, and the researcher who found it says it can be used to escape the guest and run code on the host machine. The affected code is part of the mainline Linux kernel for ARM64, and it is fixed in Linux 6.18.51, 7.2.5, and 7.3-rc1. Nested virtualization…

These days in Canada, all eyes are on the country’s west. Alberta is hurtling toward a controversial Oct. 19 independence referendum, with reported meddling by both U.S. influencers and Russian bot farms. In response, Ottawa is promising billions in new investments in the province’s fossil fuel industry despite Supreme Court judgements that the entire separatist campaign is likely unconstitutional—and polling suggesting that it will lose. But while this noisy sideshow distracts policymakers and pundits, a much more serious challenge to Canadian unity has arisen in the country’s far north, where the nation’s Inuit leadership has decried what one leader called…

Unlock the Editor’s Digest for freeRoula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.China accounted for 40 per cent of global container exports on a rolling average over the past three months, according to the head of the European business chamber in the country, underscoring how the world’s second-largest economy is relying on trade to power economic growth. That figure also represented a 2.5 percentage point increase in just nine months, suggesting that global trade imbalances were growing more quickly than expected, said Jens Eskelund, president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. “I…
When British neocloud Nscale goes public, it will test public investors’ appetite for a stock whose revenue is tied primarily to two customers. Since it was spun out of Australian cryptocurrency mining company Arkon Energy two years ago, Nscale has amassed over $103 billion worth of contracts, according to its IPO filing. But there’s a catch: Most of that, about 85%, comes from a deal to supply Microsoft with $43.8 billion worth of compute through 2033, and another supply agreement worth $44.6 billion with Anthropic. Moreover, Anthropic’s agreement is contingent on Nscale obtaining financing, and the AI lab retains the…
When the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) became enforceable across the European Union in January 2025, it triggered an administrative sprint. Financial entities spent the first year establishing risk governance, assessing third-party service providers, updating contract clauses, and documenting incident escalation workflows. Now in its second year, the harder part of DORA is demonstrating how well frameworks work in practice. EU regulators are increasing their focus on DORA implementation, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) incident analysis, and the effectiveness of ICT risk supervision. For security teams, that raises an important question: does the SOC have enough visibility to detect, investigate,…
This story is about Shortwave Coffee bitcoin acceptance and a massive worldwide movement. There are millions of insistent bitcoiners walking up to counters and asking the same four words, “Do you accept bitcoin?”. Half the time we already know the answer is no. We ask anyway, because the look on a cashier’s face when a stranger asks about magic internet money over a $5 latte never gets old. This year the math shifted in our favor. In March 2026, Square began automatically switching on bitcoin acceptance for up to 4 million terminals, moving the feature from an opt-in tool to…
