Re your article on travel etiquette (The ultimate guide to travel etiquette: how to handle 36 tricky situations, from manspreaders to smelly armpits, 4 August), it’s totally wrong to advise people not to give up seats for a woman any more. Women could be menstruating, in the first trimester of pregnancy (the most exhausting time, and not one you advertise with badges saying “Baby on board”), perimenopausal, menopausal or have endometriosis (excruciating pain). Women live with a level of pain and discomfort as routine, for much of their lives. Yes, of course men can be suffering with specific ailments at…
The claim that U.S. President Donald Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment right to refuse to self-incriminate over 400 times in a deposition for his civil fraud case in 2022 was supported by partial and secondhand evidence, but Snopes was unable to access enough primary evidence to definitively rate it. The rumor stems from posts defending Dr. Anthony Fauci’s repeated use of the Fifth Amendment in a Senate hearing after Republican attacks suggesting the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director wouldn’t have repeatedly invoked it if he were innocent. A judge in the case stated in a motion…

Charles S. Faddis, a former C.I.A. officer who became an outspoken critic of the agency, a leader of the 2020 election-denial movement in Pennsylvania and a conspiracy theorist who appeared often on Steve Bannon’s far-right podcast “War Room,” died on July 25 in Philadelphia. He was 68.His death, at a hospital, was announced by his family. His Substack newsletter said he had been hospitalized for Covid-related lung disease and pneumonia.Mr. Faddis, who often went by his middle name, Sam, spread baseless claims to receptive Republicans that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen, and that former President Joseph R. The appeal of free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels has always been the way they make it easier to (re)discover classic films and series. But Roku’s latest experiment in the FAST space has less to do with traditionally produced entertainment and is entirely focused on giving viewers access to a constant source of AI-generated content. This week, Roku added four new channels to its library of streamable programming. Along with dedicated feeds for old episodes of Mad TV, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and a variety of Black sitcoms, the platform also debuted a 24/7 stream filled with projects from Colin…
In this tutorial, we build an advanced multimodal retrieval-augmented generation pipeline with NVIDIA NeMo Retriever. We begin by configuring a Python 3.12 environment, installing the required packages, and performing offline PDF text extraction without relying on a GPU or external API key. We then extend the workflow with hosted NVIDIA NIM endpoints to detect page elements, extract tables, charts, and infographics, generate dense vector embeddings, and store the processed content in LanceDB. Finally, we implement dense retrieval, vision-language reranking, metadata-filtered search, grounded response generation with inline citations, and a lightweight recall-at-k evaluation to validate retrieval quality across multimodal document content.…
A cluster of nearly 800 malicious packages has been published to the npm registry as part of a new campaign designed to deliver cross-platform malware targeting Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. “These packages appear to use AI slop squatted, or randomly generated typo-squatting package names, but all of them deliver a powerful RAT and infostealer payload,” OpenSourceMalware researcher Paul McCarty said. Unlike other npm-oriented software supply chain attacks that make use of lifecycle hooks like preinstall or postinstall to trigger the execution of malicious code, the newly identified packages come with a README that instructs developers to load them with…
The President Donald Trump-backed media company, Trump Media and Technology Group, is pulling back from two of its crypto deals, according to a report by Axios. The publication reported Friday that the two deals with Crypto.com — a prediction market and treasury — would not go ahead. Citing comments from fusion energy company TAE’s interim CEO, Kevin McGurn, the publication said that Trump Media had pulled the deals as the market for digital asset treasury companies had become saturated over the past year. Trump Media last year said it was working with crypto exchange Crypto.com to build a Cronos treasury…
