Women’s AFCON 2026: Tournament gets underway after months of delay – Sports

Originally scheduled for last spring, the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finally kicks off this Sunday in Rabat, Morocco. Algeria take on Senegal in the opening match, while defending champions Nigeria begin their quest to retain the title as the tournament favourites.

Elsewhere in the sports news, Kang-in Lee’s move to Atletico Madrid has been made official. The South Korean, a two-time European champion with PSG, has signed a five-year deal with the Spanish club. Lyon, meanwhile, have taken a gamble on Loïs Openda, with the Belgian striker joining on a season-long loan from Juventus. In the Premier League, Arsenal are monitoring Vinicius Junior, who has just one year remaining on his contract with Real Madrid.

Richard Carapaz completed a memorable double at the Tour de France. The Ecuadorian claimed victory on Stage 20 on Saturday and will also take the polka-dot jersey to Paris as the race’s best climber. Barring a dramatic twist, yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar will seal a fifth Tour de France title on Sunday, ahead of Remco Evenepoel and Isaac del Toro. On his Tour debut, Paul Seixas is set to finish an outstanding fourth overall.

A dream breakthrough for Quentin Halys. The 29-year-old Frenchman captured the first ATP title of his career in Kitzbuhel, Austria, defeating Alexander Bublik in the final.

In Estoril, Portugal, Luca Van Assche will contest the first ATP final of his career on Sunday. The Frenchman beat compatriot Hugo Gaston in the semi-finals and will face Belgium‘s Alexander Blockx for the title.

In Formula 1, Lando Norris will start Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position — the 17th pole of the Briton’s career.

And finally, a historic achievement for Toma Junior Popov. He has become the first French player ever to reach the final of a Super 1000 event, the highest tier of world badminton, and will bid for the China Open title on Sunday.
