Humans may not be as hardwired for violence as we thought

New research from the University of Lincoln, UK, is questioning a long standing idea about the evolutionary roots of human violence. The findings suggest that everyday aggression does not necessarily build toward deadly conflict.

Published in the international journal Evolution Letters, the study indicates that mild aggression and lethal violence may have developed through different evolutionary processes. That distinction adds a new layer to the long-running debate over whether violence is an inherent part of human nature.

The work was led by Professor Bonaventura Majolo of the University of Lincoln, alongside Dr. Samantha Wakes and Professor Marcello Ruta.

Aggression May Not Be a Single Trait

Many theories about the origins of violence treat aggression as one broad behavioral characteristic. Under that view, species that frequently engage in everyday fights or disputes might also be expected to show higher levels of lethal violence.

The new research suggests that this assumption may be too simple.

The team examined patterns of aggression across 100 primate species, including humans. Their analysis showed that species with high levels of mild aggression were not necessarily more likely to kill competitors.

Instead, deadly behaviors such as killing adult rivals or infanticide appeared to follow their own evolutionary patterns, largely separate from routine conflict.

Mild Conflict and Lethal Violence Follow Different Paths

The results challenge the idea that violence can be explained as a straightforward evolutionary inheritance.

Rather than forming a single scale that runs from minor disputes to lethal attacks, different types of aggression may arise under different social and evolutionary pressures.

That suggests the link between everyday aggression and extreme violence could be much weaker than some previous theories have proposed.

Bonaventura Majolo, Professor of Social Evolution, said: “Understanding the evolutionary roots of violence is important not only for biology but also for how we think about human behavior.

“Our study shows that the evolution of aggression follows more complex patterns than what earlier models proposed, that it is biologically inaccurate to rank species on the basis of their general propensity for aggression and that we need a more nuanced approach when discussing whether humans are inherently violent.”

    What 100 Primate Species Reveal

The researchers compared five different forms of aggression, ranging from ordinary conflicts to lethal attacks, using a large dataset spanning many primate species.

They found that different types of lethal aggression were moderately associated with one another. However, those forms of deadly violence showed little connection with mild aggression.

That pattern suggests that the biological and evolutionary mechanisms behind lethal violence are distinct from those that drive everyday conflict.

The findings add new evidence to a longstanding debate in anthropology and evolutionary biology over what shapes human violence. Researchers have long questioned whether violent behavior is rooted mainly in deep evolutionary history or is more strongly influenced by social and cultural forces.
