GamerCard Review: A Flawed Pocket-Size Retro Handheld

Once loaded, games do look fantastic. Pixel art titles in particular really pop on GamerCard’s bright, colorful, 60-frames-per-second display—classic SNES RPG Secret of Mana and platformer Super Adventure Island looked especially lovely. The only hitch is that the GamerCard stretches games to fit its square screen, regardless of aspect ratio display settings in RetroPie. (Finding these is another chore—you can access an emulation menu by holding Select and the “north” face button, although this is never explained anywhere.) Hopefully this is corrected in the future, allowing players to enjoy games in their original dimensions.

The problem with emulation in general, on any platform, is that performance and compatibility can vary wildly. How well the core mimics original hardware, the ROM file, and the hardware it’s running on can all impact how well a game plays. RetroPie wouldn’t load any Game Boy ROMs I tried, and although it launched SNES games, creating saves was unreliable. It’s hard to pin that on hardware or software, but again, I hope the company irons it out. Playing the games that did load had all the same problems the GamerCard presented for its native titles—inconsistent control layouts, laggy inputs, and a general unresponsiveness that frustrates.

    Who’s Holding the Cards?

The GamerCard has an identity crisis. Is a casual consumer who picks up a fun-looking gadget next to an Amazon gift card likely to want—or know how to—acquire ROMs and set up an FTP client to get them onto the device? Will they have the patience to figure out which unmarked button does what, and why that keeps changing? Or do they want some recognizable games they can play with ease?

Conversely, are more technically proficient users likely to want a Raspberry Pi with the compromises this brings in the name of portability rather than just building their own machine for retro gaming? Ultimately, I’m just not sure who this is for.

Its potential is clear. Like any Raspberry Pi, this is a full computer in and of itself. The company claims it’s “easily programmable” in MicroPython, C, C++, and Basic, and there’s even a version of the Pico-8 game dev engine available. There’s enormous promise for educational and creative purposes. The sheer passion behind it is also evident—it’s the brainchild of Grant Sinclair, nephew of inventor Clive Sinclair, who built the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 8-bit home computer.

Anyone content to dig into the programming and kitbashing side of Raspberry Pi may find a great product here. For everyone else, a future GamerCard 2 with a more intuitive interface, games designed explicitly for the platform and, critically, much better controls could be fantastic. I hope that version exists someday. Right now, the GamerCard feels more prototype than retail-ready.
