Did Grindr crash during 2026 RNC in Dallas? Facts behind outage claim

    • The claim that attendees of the 2026 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas, caused an outage of popular gay dating app Grindr circulated online in September 2026.
    • The rumor stems from incident reports shared on social media, taken from a third-party service called Downdetector during the time of the event. However, the incidents were not isolated to Dallas, and Grindr itself did not report any major outages connected to the event.
    • A spokesperson for Grindr told Snopes, “Grindr has not experienced recent outages. Third party sources that often make these claims rely on unreliable data such as self-reporting, while Grindr reports outages directly on its status page.” The status page showed no outages in August or September 2026.
    • While some users may have had trouble with the service on Sept. 9 and 10, 2026, including in and around the area where the RNC was being held, we were unable to independently verify that the reported errors were authentic or that they were caused specifically by RNC attendees.

With high-stakes midterms looming in November 2026, the Republican National Convention took place in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 9 and 10, 2026. Rumors spread that the convention’s attendees were causing an outage of the popular gay dating app Grindr.

People on social media sites shared a purported screenshot that showed a map depicting hotspots of Grindr outages across the country, with the brightest spot focused on Dallas.

The popularity of the rumor led many Snopes readers to reach out via email and social media, asking if the claim was true.

We weren’t able to independently verify claims of Grindr outages in Dallas, so we’ve left this claim unrated. The screenshots appeared to be taken from Downdetector, a third-party service that tracks outages of popular services, and did not show signs of fabrication or misleading editing.

According to Downdetector, users did report incidents at the time and location in question, but the incidents reported on Sept. 9 and 10 were not limited to Dallas or even Texas. There was also no way to confirm that the reports reflected real issues with the app, as Downdetector does not require users to submit any proof.

Grindr itself did not report any outages during that time.

A spokesperson for Grindr told Snopes via email: “Grindr has not experienced recent outages. Third party sources that often make these claims rely on unreliable data such as self-reporting, while Grindr reports outages directly on its status page.”

The company’s status page showed no outages or incidents in August or September 2026.

Downdetector tracks data for the prior 24 hours and does not archive its history.

Snopes first checked Downdetector’s page for Grindr on Sept. 10, 2026. It showed a spike of reported outages on Sept. 9 around 8:49 p.m., with the highest number of reports clocked at 460.

When we checked Downdetector on Sept. 11, the past 24 hours showed a peak of only 73 reports around 3:18 p.m. on Sept. 10.

The incident heat map provided by Downdetector, which we first checked on Sept. 10, showed the highest concentration of outages in Dallas and Austin, Texas, but also indicated reports were being submitted in other major cities like New York, Boston and Chicago.

A look at the same map one day later showed lower concentrations of reports of problems in the same cities.

(Grindr outage map on Sept. 11, 2026. (Downdetector))

“A small number of reports does not necessarily indicate a significant issue,” states Downdetector’s “methodology” page explaining how the tool works.

The page explains that Downdetector “calculates a baseline volume of typical problem reports for each service monitored” based on an average over six months, and “only reports an incident when the number of problem reports is significantly higher than the baseline.”

Further, Downdetector allows users reporting the issues to comment on the page. During the period of Snopes’ review for this claim, multiple comments on Grindr’s Downdetector page referenced the RNC with comments like, “Convention in Dallas, as always.” There was no indication those comments came from people genuinely experiencing connection issues in Dallas.

So while it appeared that some users may have had trouble with the service on Sept. 9 and 10, 2026, including in and around the area where the RNC was being held, there was not enough evidence to conclude without a doubt that the reported errors were entirely authentic or that they were indeed caused specifically by attendees at the RNC.

We reached out to Ookla, the parent company of Downdetector, for further comment and will update this article if we hear back.

For further reading, we’ve investigated similar claims about Grindr, such as rumors of alleged Grindr outages near Charlie Kirk’s memorial in September 2025.
